Free Music Notes for Poodle HatFree Music Review: Wierd Al's a clever character! Hit: 5 Stars
Ever since the early 1980's, "Wierd Al" Yankovic has always been known for reinventing songs his own way-parodied, the way many of the songs he has reworked should be. On this one, he does an especially good job with artists that I principally can't stand. And of course, there are those crazy originals of his. But anyways, let's take a look.
1. Couch Potato: Parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself." If any rap song deserves a parody, then this is one of them, and it works well. True to it's name, this one's all about TV.
2. Hardware Store: Another crazy original, using various sound effects that would be heard in a hardware store (whirring drills, saws, etc.). And, like on the previous record, try to say the bridge all in one breath!
3. Trash Day: Parody of Nelly's awful "Hot In Herre." Personally, I think the punchline (Rotten Here) describes the original perfectly, and it fits the tune perfectly as well.
4. Party at the Leper Colony: This may very well be the most lyrically grotesque song he's done (it's an original!) It's well thought out though.
5. The Angry White Boy Polka: Quotes several artists, many of which I can't stand, that are all "angry white boys": Papa Roach ("Last Resort"), System of a Down ("Chop Suey"), the Vines ("Get Free"), the Hives ("Hate To Say I Told You So"), the White Stripes ("Fell In Love With A Girl"), the Strokes ("Last Nite"), Disturbed ("Down With The Sickness"), Rage Against The Machine ("Renegades of Funk"), Limp Bizkit ("My Way"), Staind ("Outside"), Kid Rock ("Bawitdaba"), P.O.D. ("Youth of the Nation"), and Eminem ("The Real Slim Shady). Hilarious!
6. Wanna B Ur Lovr: Kind of creepy lyrically (samples: "I bet you're/magically delicious/like a bowl of Lucky Charms"; "I wish I was cross-eyed/so I could see you twice"; "My love for you's like diarrhea/I just can't hold it in." Kinda creepy, but it's good.
7. A Complicated Song: Thank god he parodied the awful Avril Lavigne's "Complicated!" He thinks of four words that rhyme with "complicated": "constapated," "both related," "decapitated," and "mutilated." All of these descirbe my feelings on Avril Lavigne. Oh yeah, and the song's awesome.
8. Why Does This Always Happen To Me?: A totally self-absorbed man's monologue, HILARIOUS!
9. Ode To A Superhero: Song about Spider-Man to the tune of Billy Joel's "Piano Man"; VERY CLEVER!
10. Bob: "Wierd Al"'s homage to Bob Dylan. It's funny enough the way he sings it, but read the lyrics backwards and you'll notice a pattern.
11. Ebay: Parody of "I Want It That Way" by the awful Backstreet Boys. Hilarious; a song about a guy with all this useless junk from Ebay.
12. Genius In France: Kind of a disappointing ending, but it's okay.
Free Music Review: Weird Cover, Great Comeback! Hit: 5 Stars
I was a little leary of Poodle Hat when I bought it, even knowing that it had parodies of Eminem, Nelly, Various Rock Bands, Avril Lavigne, Billy Joel, & Backstreet Boys, but when I popped it in my cd player the morning it came out, I wasn't disappointed at all. The Parodies are pretty genuine, and stick amazingly close to the real song, as Weird AL always seems to do.1. Couch Potato - A clever version of Lose Yourself, talking about America's obsession with television. Pretty good, but Al, enough with the TV themes in your songs. Try something different. 2. Hardware Store - An amazing little song about the opening of a new hardware store. Al's speed singing in this song is unbelievable. 3. Trash Day - A clever parody of Hot In Herre, talking about the house being a mess; "I wipe my feet before I go outside" sums it up pretty well. 4. Party At The Leper Colony - A disgusting little songs about people falling apart at the party at the leper colony. One of Al's strange types of comedy. Funny nonetheless. 5. Angry White Boy Polka - This is his Polka track for the cd, and it comes out well. The songs that he chooses to parody are well chosen from the last 4 years including Last Resort, Chop Suey!, Get Free, Hate To Say I Told You So, Fell In Love With A Girl, Last Nite, Down With The Sickness, Renegades Of Funk, My Way, Outside, Bawitdaba, Youth Of The Nation, & The Real Slim Shady. 6. Wanna B Ur Lovr - A "love song" filled with all sorts of clever little pick up lines. Very funny! 7. A Complicated Song - A Parody of Complicated dealing with the issues of Constipation, Incest, and getting decapitated. Sounds gross, but it's a really funny song. 8. Why Does This Always Happen To Me - A self-centered song about natural disasters interupting Simpsons, a dead friend still owing me money, dulling my knife from stabbing my boss in the face. Another odd brand of Weird Al comedy. 9. Ode To A Superhero - A parody set to the tune of Piano Man that tells the story of Spider-man in a funny perspective. Also refers to the sequel. 10. Bob - An amazing little track, that might take some people to get, but it's just a bunch of phrases that can be spelled backwards or forwards, and they'll say the same thing. EX: Was it a car or a cat I saw? 11. EBAY - A funny parody of I Want It That Way, telling about an individual's obsession with Ebay and about all the worthless junk that you can buy on Ebay. 12. Genius In France - Think Albuquerque meets Pretty Fly. It's got the intersting story typeness and length of Albuquerque, and the strange little foreign phrases, like Pretty Fly. A classic weird al track, and a great ending to a great cd. Go out and buy this cd from this amazingly gifted, yet weird guy. Let him know how much you appreciate him, so he'll come back and make some more!

Free Music Review: It's Weird Al, what more can I say? Hit: 5 Stars
Before listening to this album, i was a fan of "Weird Al" Yankovic. Now, everything has changed. I am completley, 100% obsessed with this amazing comedian and everything about him. While my tastes in music are rather eclectic, to say the least (I am 13 years old, and listen to stuff that me parents loved way back when)I really do delight in hearing Al parodizing the modern hits that I must put up with at school dances, parties, etc: It really gives a lot more meaning to my life as a weirdo. Picture the scenario: It is a school dance, most of the kids are up front, strutting their stuff and flirting with everybody within a 10' radius. The exception is the 9 or 10 pupils at the back, who are making up really random dances, and complaining bitterly about the music choices. These are the "freaks" and I am proud to say that I am one of them. Suddenly, a new song starts up. To the others, it is just another rap song about love, lust, and hatred, but to the freaks, it is a beacon of humor lighting the way through the dim, dull world of normal people. The freaks start to sing along, but there is something different about the words. Suddenly, it dawns on the normal people that they're missing out on a huge inside joke which engages anybody with a sense of humor. The freaks are singing about television. They are laughing. They are having a good time. The normal people go home, wondering what the freaks have that causes life to be so good to them. "Maybe this is what humor is." They think. Well, i've got news for you sad little normies out there: You can have a sense of humor too! Poodle Hat is the perfect CD to introduce anybody into the world of the slightly insane, and yet amazingly clever "Weird Al" Yankovic. While you can still hear the tunes to the songs you love (thanks to the incredibly talented Bermuda Schwartz, Jim West, Steve Jay, and Ruben Valtierra) if you listen real closely, you might just hear something different: THE LYRICS!!!! Al has taken songs such as "Complicated" "Lose Yourself" and "Hot in Herre" and given them humor. What's not to love? Whether you hate the music of to day, or whether you are truly into the whole rap thing, "Weird Al" Yankovic is garunteed to have you in stitches with his ingenius parodies. And if you're just in the mood for silly stuff, Poodle Hat's originals are fantastic too! Covering subjects from cheesy pick up lines to leprosy to hardware to palindromes, Al's six new originals are simply amazing. Is there anything that I don't like about this CD? Well....ummm....let me see....It's over too soon. Which is OK if you're like me, and can listen to the CD 10 times in a row until every last lyric is memorized. You may call me sad, but us Al fans will always have the last laugh!!!!! In short, Poodle Hat is impossible NOT to like!
Free Music Review: A little something for everyone! Hit: 5 Stars
While "Weird Al" Yankovic is best known for his hit "Eat It" in 1984, he has recorded 11 albums in his prolific 20-year career. This latest composition truly does have a little something for everyone. "Poodle Hat" is the first album to come out since the platinum-selling "Running With Scissors" which debuted in 1999.The first track, "Couch Potato" is a parody of the Eminem song "Lose Yourself" and is both musically and lyrically sound. While I am not a big Avril Lavigne fan, I laughed out loud on numerous occasions during his parody of "Complicated" called "A Complicated Song." One of the odd things about this album is that it truly has songs for both the young and not-quite-as-young. I have to admit, I was a little lost during this album's polka send-off, titled "Angry White Boy Polka" because I don't listen to alternative rock. However, I found "Bob", a song in the incoherant style of Bob Dylan, to be a riot, and I bet that the parents of the kids who really love the polka will really love this song. I know I did! I was blown away by the original song "Hardware Store", and loved the cheesy silliness of the song "Wanna B Ur Lovr". The true strength of any Al album is the original songs, and when jugded by that criteria, this is a very strong album. Also, the CD has some really neat special features viewable on the computer. They have a section with Lyrics which basically scrolls the lyrics up in time with the music, which allows you to sing along or actually catch all the jokes in some of the faster songs. He also has some home movies, which I haven't had a chance to watch yet but am looking forward to, and 8 bonus tracks, mostly instrumentals of the songs on the album. I guess the best way to sum this album up is that the parodies are new and fresh and the originals are wonderful. If you're in the mood for a good laugh and a mood lifter, this album is definitely for you! This album has songs both for the hard-core Al fans such as myself as well as both kids and their parents. Also, a little bit of trivia about the cover of the album: On the cover of "Poodle Hat", there is a cute little gray poodle sitting on Al's head. That's Al's dog, Bela! Directly behind Al over his left shoulder (to the right of his head and Bela), in the green shirt, is Joel Miller. Joel is a lifelong friend of Al's and the best man at his wedding. His name might sound familiar to fans of "UHF" because the character of the boy who found the marble in the oatmeal was named after little Joel Miller.
