Free Music Notes for Running With ScissorsFree Music Review: Weird Al Is Back!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Weird Al is one of my favorite music performers of all time. He continues to do what he does best on this album, making great parodies and some good originals. "The Saga Begins" is the best here. I never even saw the Phantom Menace! Now I don't need to! LOL "My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder" is good old accordion-rock Al's been lacking in years. "Pretty Fly For A Rabbi" is a likable parody of one of the most annoying songs ever (White Guy). "The Weird Al Show Theme is better being seen, but is still superb. "Jerry Springer" is another great parody, this time parodying "One Week," a song I like. "Germs" is rather interesting. Sounds like a cross between "Closer" and "Terrible Lie," both done by NIN. "Polka Power" was a little weak, maybe because the material was painful to hear (MMMbop, Wannabe, Push) "Your Horoscope For Today" was a nice nugget of ska with twisted lyrics. "It's All About The Pentiums" is funny, and it's nice to see Al actually release a tribute to nerds. "Truck Driving Song" and "Grapefruit Diet" were a little weak. The former was a throwaway and the latter is just another food song by Al. "Albuquerque" is an 11-minute opus. It was great to hear him ranting over and over!!! Overall, this was a great album, better than Bad Hair Day. Weird Al never has a weak album.
Free Music Review: GREATEST CD EVER MADE Hit: 5 Stars
"Weird Al" Yankovic has always been the funniest and most talented singer out there. I thought Bad Hair Day was as good as a CD could get. Then I bought Running with Scissors. This CD is amazing. The Saga Begins is great because, not only is it about The Phantom Menace, which is one of, if not my favorite movies ever, but it is a perfect parody of American Pie. Pretty Fly for a Rabbi is really funny. Not only is the Weird Al Show theme really funny, but I love it because the show was like my favorite show, before they stopped making it. It's amazing how good Jerry Springer sounds, especially in the really fast parts. Germs is a really cool song, in my opinion. I think it's probably the most underrated song on the album. Polka Power is a close second to Polka Your Eyes Out, as far as his polka songs go. Your Horoscope for Today is alright, I guess. I LOVE It's All About the Pentiums. Especially the line about his mizouse. I'm not sure what I think about Truck Driving Song. It's...weird. I wanted Grapefruit Diet to be good, but I don't really like it. It's ok, but it should have been better. But ALBUQUERQUE is the GREATEST SONG EVER! I have listened to all 11 minutes and 22 seconds of it TONS of times, and I will never get sick of it. It is hillarious. Overall, an amazing CD.By the way, I intentionally left out My Baby's In Love with Eddie Vedder. I don't like that song at all. Oh well. Still a great CD.
Free Music Review: Al rebounds from BHD in a big way... Hit: 5 Stars
Lots of people liked Bad Hair Day. I sort of liked it. It was nowhere near what Al is capable of, and I was afraid Al's genius was slipping away from him... HOWEVER, Running With Scissors deserves a place amongst the greatest Al albums of all time, and probably one among the greatest comedy albums of all time. His new batch of parodies is full of sharp observation and social commentary, with a lot of belly laughs. "All About the Pentiums" mocks computer nerds who think being a man is all about having the fastest computer, and has a lot of fun with the subject. What makes Running With Scissors truly special, though, is the great selection of originals. The rambling "Albuquerque" is a wonderful romp through an irrational mind at work. "My Baby's in Love With Eddie Vedder" pokes lots o' fun at Generation X. Each and every original is musically interesting, and funny as hell while covering a landscape of styles (ska through country through the heavy throb techno-slop of Nine Inch Nails). Topping off the album are a trademark polka medley (this one is one of Al's best), and the whirlwind zaniness of "The Weird Al Show Theme" I'm proud to say, this is some excellent work on the part of Weird Al and his band. Running With Scissors is simply wonderful... I urge you to buy Running With Scissors. joe
Free Music Review: A great buy for any Al fan Hit: 5 Stars
This is definetly one of Wierd Al's best Al-bums, it is consistently and very well written1. The Saga Begins, very catchy and does a great job of adapting the Phantom Menace to American Pie 4.5/5 2. My Baby's in love with Eddie Vedder, the low point of the album, boring, uninspired and just bad. Maybe it's because I dont know who Eddie Vedder is 2/5 3. Pretty Fly for a Rabbi, copies the voice of the Offspring signer perfectly, a great parodie 4.5/5 4. Weird Al Show Theme, very fast song, the best thing about it is trying to learn all the lyrics 3.5/5 5.Jerry Springer, Very funny but I was suprised with how vulgar it is, woofie dosent love you! 4.5/5 6.Germs, an alright song on all levels, a parody of nine inch nails 3.5/5 7.Polka Power, as expected, the polka song is great but isn't on par with Angry White Boy Polka on Poodle Hat 4.5/5 8.Thats your Horoscope for Today, funny, clever and a great original, apparently a javelin is going to hurled through my chest 5/5 9. Its all about the Pentiums, My favorite weird al song (tied with Amish Paradise) Extremely catchy and it has an awesome beat 5/5 10. Truck Drivin song, funny the first time, old the second 3/5 11. Grapefruit Diet, a sequel to weird al's fat, at least to me, I like both songs 4.5/5 12. Albuquerque, one of the best weird al songs to date, an 11 minute long comedy track, just awesome 5/5
Free Music Review: Great Album, With a Slight Misunderstanding Hit: 5 Stars
I'm a proud Weird Al fan, and thoroughly enjoyed Poodle Hat. I must admit that the typical Al-bum has three or four good songs, with the remaining being forgetable or annoying. However, this pattern changed with Bad Hair Day, Al's first consistantly funny Al-bum. Fortunately, Poodle Hat continues in the tradition of Running With Scissors and Bad Hair Day.That said, there is one thing I would like to address. It seems that Al had the misfortune of releasing Poodle Hat immediately following Bush's temper tantrum with France. This has resulted in a misunderstanding that "Genius in France" was an attack on the French. In fact, the song is actually a loving tribute to Jerry Lewis. Maybe Al's current fan base is too young to remember Lewis, a goofy comedian who was a huge hit in the 50s and 60s, and probably best remembered for his partnership with Dean Martin and for being the original Nutty Professor. Although Lewis is best known these days in the States for his Labour Day Telethon, he remained a huge star in France, a "genius" if you will. It's been alleged that his popularity there is because his goofy antics embodies the French stereotype of Americans, although I've heard Jerry say his popularity is is due to their good taste :) So there you have it, "Genius in France" is a tribute to Jerry Lewis, a very talented comedian in his own right.
