Free Music Notes for Running With ScissorsFree Music Review: A Refreshing Change and Worthy Answer to "POP" songs Hit: 5 Stars
In an age of "Boy Bands" and add water-and-stir music, it is good to know that someone in show business still thinks on his own and is not afraid to be himself. Although I am not very familiar with his music, I found RWS to be a worthy CD (definitely worth the price I paid for it as it was a gift). I agree with some of the reviewers in that the "truck driver" song was a little bit risque--but the overall hilarity of "Jerry Springer" alone more than compensates. When buying a Weird Al CD, it is probably important to make sure that you are familiar with the songs he parodies, because only then can you truly experience the genius that is Weird Al. My dad (who is really old) enjoyed "The Saga Begins" but did not find any of the other songs nearly as entertaining. This is a very short CD, only about 40 minutes...but if you don't live under a rock and have any semblance of a sense of humor, it'll seem more like 4 minutes because you'll be laughing the whole time. Although Weird Al is no Vivaldi, for modern "muzak" this album is surprisingly creative. It's worth the investment! POLKA POWER!
Free Music Review: Tracks of an evolving artist (?) Hit: 5 Stars
Wierd Al himself based his continual success in the last twenty years on his ability to change with the times. Because he paradies modern music, it never gets old. And thanks to his own unique comedic talents, he won't be going out of style for some time.'Running With Scissors' is not Al's best album-but it's darn close. The opening theme to Star Wars I, while probably not remembered by the mainstream, is a classic parody. While I was disappointed by the lack of mocking boy bands, Al does wonders with Bare Naked Ladies in 'Jerry Springer' and his neo-funk comedy hit 'All About the Pentiums.' His original tracts are equally entertaining and, to be redundant, original. Just listen to 'My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder' and 'Truck Driver's Song' if you don't believe me. And, of course, the best of the best, and my personal favorite Wierd Al song, would have to be 'Pretty Fly (For a Rabbi)', but then again I'm a bit biased. Wierd Al has done it again. He's evolved--or mutated, more accurately--with the flow of pop culture, and in doing so has continued to keep our pathetic, meaningless lives filled with hilarity.
Free Music Review: Weird Al, The King With The Midas Touch Hit: 5 Stars
Weird Al Yankovic, the King of Parody, strikes gold with "Running With Scissors," arguably his best album yet, and highlighted by the single best song he's ever done, "The Saga Begins." To the tune of Don McLean's "American Pie," "Saga" captures the story of "Star Wars, Episode I, The Phantom Menace" to perfection; it's all there, and it's brilliant. Pearl Jam fans especially will get a kick out of "My Baby's In Love With Eddie Vedder," but even those not familiar with them will get the drift, and it's hilarious. Then there's a foray into the world of high-tech, computers and the internet in "It's All About The Pentiums," with a great line, "What kinda chip you got in there, a dorito?" Also included in the twelve cuts is the obligatory polka piece, "Polka Power!" And yes, there's one about food, "Grapefruit Diet." Country fans get a taste with"Truck Drivin' Song," and television talk show host "Jerry Springer" gets the treatment in a song about a guy addicted to the show. This is one funny album from beginning to end, and I highly recommend it to anyone just looking for a good time and plenty of laughs.
Free Music Review: Keep it coming Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, let me say This album great and most certainly go down as one of Al's greatest hits.
First off is "The Saga Begins" a funny Star Wars song with Obi Wan telling the story of the first Episode.
Then there's " My Baby's in Love With Eddie Veder" I myself have never hear of Eddie Veder but all the same, the song is very funny with Al's girl friend falling head-over-heels in love with Eddie.
Then there's "Pretty Fly For a Rabbi" anoth great parody of "Pretty Fly For a White Guy". The song's very funny!
Then "Weird Al Theme Song" which of course was the theme song for his saturday morning show.
There's much much more but I'm going to stop here. The album is great! You'd have to be an idiot to say it's boring and not funny.
But before I leave off I want to tell you about the last song, "Albuquerque". LOL!!! I laughed my butt off listening to it! It's hard to describe, more a story than a song, but non-the-less knock-your-shoes-off funny!
If I could give this album ten stars I most certainly would!
Keep up the awesome work Al!
Free Music Review: AL NOT ONLY RUNS WITH THOSE SCISSORS, HE FLIES!! Hit: 5 Stars
I must respectfully disagree with Mike McGonigal's rather tepid review of Running With Scissors. I think this is one of Al's best and strongest works yet, and, with Al's track record extending nearly 25 years, that's saying a lot. Although the CD was released in 99, both the sly humor and great music still hold true today. I disagree (respectfully) in his timelines as to what holds comedic water and what doesn't. In fact, Al's originals are often better than most of the current pop music available today. In the quagmire of indifferent music elsewhere on the music scene, Al's talent is undeniable. I have had some of the best times of my life listening to Al's music, and this CD is no exception. I encourage you to check out the other reviews under the RWS CD for a wider variety of opinion. At last count, there were nearly 400 enthusiastic reviews with an average rating of five stars.I think anyone with a sense of humor and an ability to laugh will enjoy RWS immensely. And, I'll be among the first in line for Poodle Hat on May 20th when that comes out. Squirrelygirl
