Free Music Review: Ramones tribute that got it right!

Most Ramones tribute albums are filled with unknown bands with no musical talent whatsoever, just looking to get noticed by association.
"We're A Happy Family" breaks that trend, thanks to Rob Zombie pulling in some real star power and great production values that Ramones albums never had (although that was part of their appeal).
Some personal favorites are:
-"Blitzkrieg Bop" by Rob Zombie, it's like "Hellbilly Deluxe"+ Ramones
-"I Just Wanna Have Something To Do" by Garbage is sonically perfect and Shirley Manson's vocals lend a great edge to the song.
-"Return of Jacky and Judy" by Tom Waits is so raw and atmospheric, but keeps the catchy riff in tact.
-"Rock and Roll Radio" by KISS, although they are the antithesis of everything the Ramones stood for, this song was tailor-made for KISS and their brand of anthem rock.
-"Havanna Affair" by RHCP is the only truly unique arrangement on the album, which contains the main riff from "Pinhead" worked into it.
The other songs are good, too but these are the stand-outs.
So buy the album already-it's good times!
I do need to make a plea however, to ban Marilyn Manson from any and all tribute albums! I own quite a few and his track always ruins the listening experience. For this album he croaks through "KKK Took My Baby Away" and on the Detroit Rock City soundtrack he moves just as slowly through "Highway to Hell". There are others and I'm sure he'll do it again-the fiend must be stopped!

It was inevitable that a glut of Ramones tribute albums would follow the passing of Joey and Dee Dee Ramone. The 17-song-strong We're a Happy Family thankfully escapes the dubious tribute-album ghetto. It's no surprise that Ramones descendents like Green Day, Rancid, and the Offspring stick close to the tired and true, while headbanger James Hetfield makes "53rd & 3rd" sound like a Metallica song. But the standouts on the disc are the efforts where artists go off the rails. Pete Yorn turns in a yearning version of "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," while Tom Waits goes the ghoulish route on "The Return of Jackie and Judy." Kiss get the best-in-show nod for their anthemic "Do You Remember Rock & Roll Radio," which is odd given that the Ramones were formed ostensibly as a reaction against arena rockers like Kiss.
