For those who have heard the first Westlife CD, this one is similar in that the same teams of writers are back. What's new and different is that we actually get a few uptempo songs that are just as good as the other songs, proving that Westlife can do more than just sing ballads. And I still think Mark has an awesome voice -- definitely the best boy band singer out there.

I have to give this CD 5 stars, as it's one of the few CD's that I really want to listen to all the way through. Sure, not all 19 songs are awesome, but at least 15 of them are -- more songs than you'll find on a typical CD. Their record company was just silly for not releasing this CD in the U.S. I make believers out of all the people that I force to listen to this!

Song by song review:

1) "My Love" Westlife's 7th straight U.K. #1 hit. This is just a great ballad, not much else to say.

2) "What Makes a Man" A nice ballad once it grew on me, but this song will probably forever be known as the single to break the string of U.K. #1 hits... stopped at #2 by "Bob the Builder", whoever the heck that is.

3) "I Lay My Love on You" The (European) single re-mix of an already very cool mid-tempo song. OK, so it kind of reminds me of "Shape of My Heart" from the Backstreet Boys, but I love it anyway.

4) "Against All Odds" Most Americans may not know who they are, but Mariah Carey thought enough of the guys from Westlife to ask them to sing with her on her U.K. release of the old Phil Collins song. She was pretty smart -- it went straight to #1. I love Mark's verse. Now how do we get Mariah to shut up and let the guys sing more?

5) "When You're Looking Like That" Wow, the first real uptempo song from the guys! This is the single re-mix, which is even cooler than the regular version. Very catchy! Co-written by Max Martin. Check out the behind-the-scenes music video if you have a fast internet connection. :-)

6) "Close" I can't listen to this one when I'm tired... It's a pretty ballad, I suppose, but not a real interesting one, though it picks up near the end.

7) "Somebody Needs You" Stuck somewhere between uptempo and mid-tempo, this is nevertheless a real catchy song. I'm biased though... I probably like it so much because you can hear Mark above the others in the chorus.

8) "Angel's Wings" Kind of a follow-up to "Flying Without Wings" from the first CD. It starts out slowly, but really builds up with a backing orchestra and choir.... and some great lead vocals from Shane and (especially) Mark.

9) "Soledad" Quite possibly my favorite song on the CD, this is a very nice Latin-inspired ballad. No clue why this wasn't ever released as a single in the U.K. or Europe.

10) "Puzzle of My Heart" A pretty ballad co-written by Andrew Fromm (who wrote "I Need You Tonight" for the Backstreet Boys).... Like "Close", I can't listen to this one when I'm tired. Wake me up for Mark's part.

11) "Dreams Come True" Another one of the uptempo tracks. Westlife used this song to kick off their concerts on their world tour earlier this year. Not my favorite, but how can I hate a song when Mark sings a whole verse?

12) "No Place That Far" See review of "Puzzle of My Heart", except for the part about Andrew Fromm. :-)

13) "You Make Me Feel" A ballad co-written by Max Martin that can best be described as "cute". Notable because the little-used Nicky and Kian sing lead for the verses. Why don't they get to sing more often???

14) "Loneliness Knows Me By Name" Hard to describe, but this song really grew on me, and it's now one of my favorites on the CD. Not 100% a ballad, but not really mid-tempo either.

15) "Fragile Heart" A very pretty ballad written by Bryan, Kian and Shane. Limited background music lets the vocals shine through. I hope the guys write more songs on their upcoming third CD!

16) "Every Little Thing You Do" I should like this one, but I really don't. Oh well.

17) "Uptown Girl" Awesome cover of the 1983 Billy Joel hit, recorded for the Comic Relief charity. This song became Westlife's 8th U.K. #1 in March of 2001. Listen closely and you can hear Nicky and Kian singing two lines each. They didn't stray too far from the original version, but somehow I like this version better. Even Billy Joel thinks they did a good job. :-)

18) "I Have a Dream" Another cover song. I never much liked this one until I heard this re-mix. Can't say that I remember ABBA'a original version from the 1970's, even though I owned one of their albums as a kid.

19) "My Girl" Very cool cover of the Motown classic. Mark was born to sing R&B. They did this song a cappella as part of a Motown medley on this year's world tour.

My only disappointment is that the very cool "Nothing Is Impossible" didn't make this version of the CD. That's what computers are for, I guess...
