Free Music Review: Still crazy after all these years
Hit: 5 Stars

It's hard to believe this one is more than a decade old now. However, it's such a timeless record that its age doesn't even seem to matter. The 1990s saw the burgeoning "No Depression" sound grow into a full-fledged subgenre, but it's unclear whether these artists shared anything more than a common set of influences. Whether or not Ryan Adams and crew ever listened to Uncle Tupelo's first album (the origin of the "No Depression" term), what they created here ranks with that material as raw, honest Americana rock n roll. I still think this material and the two follow-up efforts top the majority of Adams's solo work in terms of songwriting and overall approach. Whereas some of Adams's more confessional-sounding solo material seems a little forced to me, the songs on this album flow naturally and legitimately strike a chord. Rather than doing any sort of song-by-song dissection (they're all great) I am going to urge anyone who stumbles on this review to go track down this lost classic.

Hit: 5 Stars

For those of you who aren't yet familiar with Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown's front man, take note. He is one of the best songwriters out there right now. Whether it's the rocking "Drowned Like a River" and "16 Days" or the beautifully simple "Tennessee Mtn. Angel", this guy knows what he is doing. I have had the opportunity to hear the entire new album, Pneumonia, due out 5/22/2001. This album will definitely be an instant classic, albeit a posthumous release since they have since disbanded. Ryan seems to like doing his own thing these days. Check out his solo album as well. Saw him perform as Ryan Adams and the Pinkhearts in Austin, TX at SXSW Music Fest. Hard, "In-Yur-Face" rock. The home-made shirt of the Pinkhearts bassist ironically said it best: "Who the [heck] is Ryan Adams?" If you don't know the answer to that, you soon will! Buy all the Whiskeytown and Ryan Adams you can buy and look for re-runs of Austin City Limits featuring Whiskeytown.

Free Music Review: I'm moving to Faithless Street!
Hit: 5 Stars

This disc is a gem! If you like rock, country, folk, punk--it's all here with musical arrangements that are a little ragged and off kilter in a way that makes you say "WOW!" The lyrics evoke vivid images of broken down drunks, loneliness, despair and broken hearts. But all is not doom and gloom-"Mining Town" and "Factory Girl" are sweet, and "Matrimony" tries to answer that question "when are you getting married?" in a somewhat cynical way. Underlying it all is a sense of hopefulness, that they really are going to figure it out someday. Ryan Adams voice is perfect for these songs, and he and Caitlin Cary have some great vocal harmonies on "16 Days" and "Lo-Fi Tennessee Mountain Angel." I guess it's considered alt-country because they use a violin and a pedal steel on some of the songs, but DON'T let that scare you away-this is a must have. Highly Recommended!

Free Music Review: Definitely an Essential
Hit: 5 Stars

Whether you are a fan of indie rock, non-Music Row country, classic singer/songwriter classics, or punk with depth, this single CD will hit 'em all separately and together with conviction. Beyond all, forget all the genre labels, this CD is the product of amazing songwriting. Some of the material is so musically simple while still coming across as emotionally complex, each song truly is a masterpiece. A true classic!!! Forget all the legend and hype. Start with the music and you will come to the inevitable conclusion... Whiskeytown was a great American band. They made three great albums, and this is one of them. Check them all out. They are all different, and they are all worth a good solid listen. You won't be sorry.

Free Music Review: Wow.
Hit: 5 Stars

I never buy a CD from just hearing 30-second audio samples, but I made an exception for this one. There is not a single track out of the 21 I heard that I didn't fall in love with. I only purchased this album three days ago, but I've already listened to it six or seven times. I don't remember an album that I've listened to as much as this one on purchase.

I was previously under the belief that the Jayhawks made the best alt-country album of all time with "Tomorrow the Green Grass". Ryan Adams and 1996-era Whiskeytown has proven me wrong. This album is mucho better than Adams' own "Gold".
