Free Music Review: Abstract Simplicity
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a huge fan of The White Stripes for a couple of years now, and after hearing "Elephant" I didn't think they could do anything better. They proved me wrong earlier this with the masterpiece "Get Behind Me Satan," an album so complex and developed it would make any true artist proud. Upon hearing that album I was totally besotted with Jack and Meg White, and was compelled to go out and buy their first three albums, the 1999 self-titled debut, the 2000 follow-up "De Stijl" and 2001's real breakthrough "White Blood Cells." To be honest I've found it quite hard to get into these first three albums, and De Stijl has probably been the most difficult of the three. I listened to it more and more and realised that the reason I didn't like it to begin with was because I wasn't truly playing attention. When you take this album seriously the true genius of Jack White shines through.

Every generation has its rock icon. Kurt Cobain was one, and Jack White is undoubtedly my generation's icon. The guy is a hero and millions of aspiring rock stars look up to him because of the music he's created. Constant re-invention and an evolving style is what will keep The White Stripes fresh and distinctive for years to come. I have no doubt that they are already rock legends. They could pack it up now and run off into the sunset and still be remembered 40 years down the line. Since that isn't going to happen any time soon, I believe The White Stripes will go on to become one of the all-time great rock bands.

The album opens with the catchy "You're Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl)." The song isn't even two minutes long, but the chorus is so memorable that it will stick in your mind as one of the album's signature sounds. "Hello Operator" is an incredible song where Jack's vocals just crush you from inside. Meg's solo is also quite unbelievable and very wild. "Little Bird" is one of my favourite songs on the album, because it has an incredible bass and some wicked guitar work from Jack. There's one song on each album by The White Stripes that begins with the word "Little," and this is probably the best of the bunch! The funky guitar solo that stomps in at 0:32 is amazing and really gets my feet tapping. "Apple Blossom" introduces a piano that is quite unheard of from the duo up until this point, but goes down a treat. The melody is so strong and infectious that it slides along harmoniously with Jack's voice.

"I'm Bound To Pack It Up" is a softer track. The hard raw guitar sound isn't present here, as the band enlist the help of Paul Henry Ossy for the violin. Meg works a treat with her funky red egg shaker(!) and Jack works the stand up bass so powerfully that his soul seems to be teased out all over the arrangement. "Death Letter" is a funky little number with some great guitar work. Okay, so it's a cover and I haven't heard the original but I don't think I need to based on the standard of this one! "Sister, Do You Know My Name?" is a bit of a slower song, the bass is a bit drab and whilst the guitar work is superb as usual, this song lacks something that makes all the others so special. "Truth Doesn't Make A Noise" is a brilliant song with an almost Western feel to it. The image of rolling haystacks over a desert as cowboys ride on horseback is just the perfect image for this song in my opinion. There's also some awesome piano work that evokes a melancholy atmosphere.

"A Boy's Best Friend" is another song that I find less than brilliant, because the guitar is quite repetitive and drab. "Let's Build A Home" is a much-needed kick up the butt after the last song, as the stomping guitars race back into view. The drums climb and then crash towards the end, sounds pretty awesome. "Jumble, Jumble" has a great guitar section that sounds small and scratchy, which is contrasted against the stomping drum beat. "Why Can't You Be Nicer To Me?" has a guitar section that reminds me of something from the band's first album in the way it stop-starts before stalling to let the drums take over. The song closes with what I presume is an electric violin which sounds so unusual. The album closes with "Your Southern Can Is Mine." This song is very hillbilly in its quality, and even though Jack's vocals are more dominant, Meg's voice can be heard faintly in the background.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

This album is very simple and the instrumentals are very minimal, which reflect the band's trademark sound. This is also reflected in the artwork in the Dutch art movement of De Stijl (The Style). There are some rather obscure sounds that dominate this album which are quite abstract and difficult, yet the music on the surface remains simplistic and pure. I find this an interesting juxtaposition, and perhaps represents the reason The White Stripes are so popular despite making music that sounds decades old. This band have created true rock and roll lightening many times on their five albums, and will no doubt continue to make more as they progress. This album doesn't contain the most moments (look to Elephant for that) but it contains some; they happen to be some of the best, too.

De Stijl Poster

The band's second album, recorded on 8-track analog tape in Jack's living room, was released in 2000 and today is a cult classic.
