Free Music Notes for White Blood Cells

Free Music Review: White Hot . . .
Hit: 5 Stars

. . . enough to inspire insane amounts of jealously, that's fer sure. So this little review is a big middle finger to all the jealous music snobs that feel the need to spit venom at the Stripes. Hello? Anybody home? Open your ears! The White Stripes rock!!! WHITE BLOOD CELLS is loaded with first-rate blues-metal stompers. There's also some sweet and tuneful mellow stuff here too as well as other surprises. This is probably their best album, a deserving breakthrough for the band. Certainly stronger overall than the subsequent ELEPHANT and GET BEHIND ME SATAN albums in my view.

Say what you want about Meg's straight-up drumming style, there's power in its simplicity and she pounds the skins with abandon. Meg skillfully shifts tempo and perfectly compliments the mood of any given song (her singing on the other hand . . . well, at least on this album her vocals sound fine in the background). Of course, the White Stripes wouldn't exist without the noisy crunch of Jack White's guitar . . .

Breakdown (some personal impressions) -

"Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" - one of the best on the album, comes crashing in with pure blues rock ecstasy. White expertly punctures the main riff with extraneous notes and effects on his guitar. *****

"Hotel Yorba" - a charming country/folk number with big noisy drums. This one's a fan favorite, and although it's not really my thing, I know a good song when I hear it. ****1/2

"I'm Finding It Harder To Be a Gentleman" - similar to the opening cut, this track's another heavy stomper and it's got some great, ringing piano riffage - killer! *****

"Fell in Love with a Girl" - an infectious, all-out rocker and the Stripes' breakout hit. A blast! My first exposure to the band was the video for this song (just as it was for thousands of other new, instantly converted fans). The Lego animation is wild and innovative, hearkening back to more creative and artistic videos like Peter Gabriel's "Big Time." ****1/2

"Expecting" - a killer, hesitant rock riff slams away as Jack White unleashes some gloriously nasal rock n' roll vocal screeches (if this sounds like a less than flattering description of Jack's vocals, know that I really do think his voice sounds great). *****

"Little Room" - a short little curio, propelled by a steady kick drum. ***

"The Union Forever" - dramatic, heavy to the point of dragging through mud, this is a fantastically sludgy rocker. "It can't be love/ For there is no true love!" ****1/2

"The Same Boy You've Always Known" - another slow and heavy stomper, this cut sports one of the best melodies on the album. *****

"We're Going to be Friends" - a quiet, utterly charming little song, just Jack singing along to his chiming, crystal-clear acoustic guitar with minimal percussion from Meg. *****

"Offend in Every Way" - a cool mid-tempo rocker. I really dig the underlying message - when in doubt, offend! Screw 'em all! ****

"I Think I Smell a Rat" - a lot of people seem to find this one annoying, but I think it's way cool. Features more prominent Spanish-guitar stylings only hinted at elsewhere on the album. ****1/2

"Aluminum" - Metal, Baby! This one's an experimental head-pounder, wicked and wiggy. Features Jack White coloring the riffs with his trademark extraneous noises and effects. The Stripes eschew modern recording techniques, using the same recording technology available in the 60's, which makes these songs even more impressive. *****

"I Can't Wait" - yet another stellar slice of quasi blues/metal, White Stripes style. Another great song that finds Jack confronting the trials and tribulations of romantic relationships. *****

"Now Mary" - another short but oh so sweet rocker, clocking in at a mere 1:47. So good! *****

"I Can Learn" - more heavy blues, the vague lyrics somehow manage to make a sad emotional connection when channeled through Jack White's voice. ****

"This Protector" - a strange, gospel and blues tinted piano-driven ballad. An unusual, interesting album closer that, like most of these songs, somehow makes a heartfelt emotional connection with the listener. ****1/2

I love it when a truly worthy band like the White Stripes comes along and actually lives up to all the media hype thrown its way. The Stripes deserve credit for reinvigorating rock 'n roll's soul in 2002 with this fantastic album.

White Blood Cells Poster

The band's commercial break through, this 2001 album went gold, spinning off the Top 20 Modern Rock hits 'Fell In Love With A Girl' and 'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground.'
Rock & roll is constantly splintering into multiple personalities. Big radio players layer thick slabs of studio shine on their albums, while back-to-the-basics rockers keep the sound so raw it rubs calluses on your ears. The White Stripes fall in the latter category. The duo strips down to the fundamentals of Meg White's simple drumbeat and Jack White's garagy guitar and pleading vocals. While the elements are sparse, the Detroit act create a noisy, hip-grinding batch of punk R&B, displayed again on White Blood Cells, the Stripes' third full-length. While it's hard to pick favorites from such talent, this band only gets better with time. White's vocals were sounding like a young Robert Plant on De Stijl--definitely not a bad thing--but on Cells, he's developed his own persona. He throws musical fits on "Fell in Love with a Girl," gets almost loungy on the piano number "This Protector," and keeps the blues vibe running on "Now Mary." The album is so rich with basic variations on a simple theme it's hard to believe such soulful energy comes from just two people. White Blood Cells is an amazing piece of work, a benchmark that ought to inspire new legions of garage rockers for years to come. --Jennifer Maerz
