Free Music Review: Great voice - uneven musical selection after you hear the hits
Hit: 4 Stars

Here's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I listen to this album for the songs popularized on the radio. They are the strongest on the album musically also. "You Give Good Love," gives me goosebumps. It has it all, Whitney hitting the high notes, clever lyrics, great music. The songs that didn't make the top 40, I find to be pedestrian musically; yeah, you do get the great Whitney voice though.

Buy this CD for the songs you know and love, "Saving My Love For You, "You Give Good Love," etc.

Free Music Review: The Golden Debut
Hit: 5 Stars

Whitney Houston exploded onto the music scene in early 1985, signing a deal with Arista Records, under the guidance of Clive Davis. Her self-titled debut, released that year was the beginning of a fruitful career and lapped up some of Whitneys very best work to date.

The debut extract would be the sparkling, vibrant ballad, You Give Good Love, produced by the divine Jermaine Jackson. Whitneys positively exquisite and exhilirating vocal delivery was astoundingly powerful, much in the shadow of the great, Aretha Franklin. Despite its glorious content, You Give Good Love bombed on the U.S charts and was therefore not even issued in the U.K through lack of interest.

The slice of disco-pop in distinctly 80's style was the angelic, How Will I Know, a rather sappy and girly tune that hardly had the credibility of the previous single, but emerged as a winner where it topped the U.S charts, whilst storming its way into the U.K Top 10 charts. How Will I Know was produced by Narada Michael Walden who would go on to produce more of her work on future albums.

Thinking About You was an electric affair with its startling electro-pop orchestrations whilst Whitneys vocal delivery is highly dynamic. More jamming pop follows with the upbeat, Someone For Me, where her rocketing vocal delivery is once again astoundingly strong.

The genius Michael Masser who had produced countless soul classics with divine soul diva, Diana Ross, was involved in most of the project and worked his magic again with this breathtaking singer. The ballad, Saving All My Love For You is so uplifting and timeless. The full force of her vocal techniques floods out on this tear-jerker of a classic. Her delivery on here is almost mesmerising.

She duets with Jermaine Jackson on the sugary, Nobody Loves Me Like You Do. There is a nice range of harmonies between these two fabulous singers and even a slight air of sexual chemistry between the two sizzles through. All At Once is another sweeping ballad where she is joined by a gospel backing choir on the exalting chrous. All At Once became another huge International hit to her credit.

Theres another duet with Jermaine Jackson included with the exotic, late night R&B number, Take Good Care Of My Heart where their vocals are propelled into full effect and both sound equally as magnificent as one another. A timeless collaboration though failed to hit the U.S top 40 charts when released as a single there.

Another one of Whitneys most definitive classics follows with her fantastic cover of The Greatest Love Of All where her wide range of spectacular abilities is displayed yet again.

Hold Me is a sickly romantic ballad on which she duets with soul crooner, Teddy Pendergrass. Despite the overly syrupy content the track is actually exhilirating on just hearing these two fine singers like captured on record together. Always makes for a dynamic combination.

This album is actually quite remarkable for a debut. Consistent, solid and high quality work from one of the greatest singers of our era, it is an indeed timeless classic and stands as some of her most memroable work.

Free Music Review: Beginning of a legend
Hit: 5 Stars

The first eponymous album that is "Whitney Houston" is the beginning of a legend. This album was a definite showcase of a still very young, very gifted, fresh face beauty who just arrived on the scene. It was the green light for a new genre of music for contemporary r&b balladeers with divaesque standards, such as the likes of copycats, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, and even dirrty little Christina Aguillera. Whitney was the original. This album, carefully tailored to her voice, was, in a nutshell, safe in many ways. With only a few workouts, such as the "Greatest Love of All" and "All At Once", the rest of the album was pretty much sapped with early eighties synthesized pop and playfull, teeny lyrics. Nevertheless, the formula obviously worked, spinning three number one hits; the sultry, slick, Grammy award winning, "Saving All My Love for You", the bouncy and effervescent "How Will I Know", and of course the George Benson cover of her eighties anthem "The Greatest Love of All." However sheltered the album may have seemed, Whitney was giving us a sneak peak into what she could (and would)later offer. Teasing us with cooing runs and licks, and slipping her sexuality in videos and performances, Whitney was downplaying her true talent, (and inner diva), in truly purest form of modesty.
And just like Mariah and Christina, Whitney would later burnish that "good girl" image into a gritty and more confident performer, no matter what tabloid weekly had to comment on. But for her first album, you simply have Whitney at the core of her potential. The album is truly one of my favorites, not just for the hits, but more because of the naturalness that it offers. As Clive Davis mentioned on the Merv Griffin show about his protege, "you either have it or you don't have it, and she's got it!" And she has truly been getting us ever since.

Free Music Review: The Maestra on the podium
Hit: 5 Stars

Vintage Whitney. You're not a music lover if you don't own this album. On this album, Whitney's at her best --- a level, vocally, very few (maybe Betty Wright or Minnie Riperton can top her) artists of any generation can hold a candle to.

R&B contemporaries & future R&B aspiring stars, listen to this album!!!!! Notice how there's only 10 tracks & they're all of "out of this world" quality.

If you can't make an album close to this in quality, you shouldn't be in the business.

Whitney's debut is pure fire!!! I actually got back into this album in 2005 ... it came out 20 years earlier when I was in second grade and I can remember learning & singing "Greatest Love of All" among classmates back in the day.

From the pop-candy sounding "How Will I Know" to the inspirational "Greatest Love of All" to the deeply soulful "You Give Good Love" to the smooth grooves of "All At Once," this was Whitney coming out to the world -- Janet Jackson and MaDonna were the other megastars of the day and she just totally destroys them vocally here.

We all know Whitney's well chronicled, shall we say, "issues" ever since.

But if she ever gets herself back together again, I'd love to hear her try to top this LP.

This album takes me back to my childhood when true "singers" sang while male & female strippers posing as "singers" knew their place (LOL).

Classic, classic, classic album. A must have for true music lovers.

Free Music Review: Whitney Houston's 1985 debut album is still wonderful!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This album of Whitney Houston from 1985 is one of the best records released during the '80s. From what I learned, when it was first released, it was an instant success and sold millions of copies and stayed on the charts for quite some time. I really love some of the songs on this title. The opening track, "You Give Good Love" is wonderful to listen to. The same thing applies to "All at Once", "Saving All My Love For You", "Greatest Love of All", and "How Will I Know". All at Once has a somewhat sad lyric to it, Saving All My Love For You has a romantic lyric to it; the saxophone is a nice addition, making the song have more of a love sound. This song starts out really soft and gets louder from the middle on. Greatest Love of All has a nice sound to it, and How Will I Know is a real jammer. This track has a nice sound to it, and I think of it as dance, hip-hop, soul, R&B, and hard rock combined into one fine smash song. The part where she screams out the title during the climax is amazing; the sax immediately screams out at that very moment. Someone for Me is another great song, where Whitney sings about wanting to meet the right kind of guy. For those of you who don't yet have this title, go and get it. It will be money well spent. Whitney Houston is a truly gifted entertainer and has a beautiful voice. It really saddens me about the lies and garbage that the media has been publishing about her within the past few years. I don't really believe what they say, in general, she is a great singer NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!!
