Free Music Review: Hope I Die Before I Get Young

What's more pathetic than an aging rocker who can't accept his age? An aging fan who wants his idol to live like Peter Pan in some eternal childlike daydream, that's what. The Who have grown up and they have grown old. Pete now writes for two old geezers, as he put it (sort of). Roger is old and so is his voice. It's the voice of the Who today. If you don't like it don't listen, end of story. However you're missing something great if you do. Roger still sings for his generation, all of which are old now. It would be stupid to try and be something your not so he sings with that great old voice that he's privileged to currently have. Personally I've never heard a better vocal performance from him than what he gives on the song Tea and Theatre. The raw emotional delivery is real. Sure there's something to be said for young bravado and screaming and shouting like you're standing on top of the world. But when you actually get to the top of the world after years of climbing and crawling your voice is going to reflect that struggle. It's real emotion, not faked and that's something to be appreciated. Something youth and inexperience can only pretend to know about. I hate it when people get older and they describe themselves as being 60 years YOUNG or 70 years YOUNG or whatever the age might be when misrepresented by that description of youth. You get old through years of struggle. It should be honored and appreciated, not belittled. The new Who lyric should be "Things They Do look Awful Dumb. Hope I Die Before I Get Young." Here's to the new Who. 40 some odd years OLD!
I read somewhere on these pages that there are no classic Who songs on this record. No classics on this record? Hardly. It's Not Enough, You Stand By Me, Black Widow's Eyes and Man in a Purple Dress. Great songs all. Mike Post Theme, naturally. Two Thousand Years, easily. Fragments, without a doubt. Does it have something of Baba to it? Of course, that's the point. If you've followed Pete's Lifehouse idea through the years you'd undertand it's presence here. The Wire and Glass mini opera is an instant classic. Perhaps it's a bit too complex in such a short time frame, but then I rather like that about it. Sound Round, Pick up the Peace, Unholy Trinity, Tribly's Piano, Endless Wire, We Got a Hit, Mirror Door and Especially Tea and Theatre really stand out. Tea and Theatre again, I just can't emphasize it enough. What a great song. What a great performance. Damn good job, Roger. Great stuff, Pete.
Who is still vital? They are.

Free Music Review: TWO'S DEADER, TWO'S LEFT (or WHO CAME AGAIN)

There is not a better Who album than ENDLESS WIRE.

I listened to it fresh, all-the-way-through, several times on a 400-mile drive last month, and the album just blew me away. "NOT a Who album," say some. "Just a Townshend album with Daltrey singing," say others.

No. NO. NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.

It is a Who album. It IS.

But The Who are now Pete and Roger....and the often-adversarial, occasionally combative relationship between these two men (not unlike Jeff Beck's description of his with Rod Stewart, i.e., "Rod and I have a love/hate relationship: he loves me, and I hate him.") is now essential to the survival of both, symbiotic to the Nth degree.

I can't even begin to do a review of the music, other than to suggest that it's Pete's best songwriting, and Roger's best singing, in years. Because of the vagaries of the British Invasion Pop Music Scene 45 years ago, gangly young Pete needed The Face ---- Roger ---- in order to ensure that the dark, brooding, quirky musicians (Townshend, Entwistle and Moon) kept to their labors, in live performance, and so....working-class golden god Daltrey gave the girls someone to squeal over.

And, fortunately, Daltrey's vocal range was exactly the same as Pete's, with great additional power. Which meant, again, that Towser could lay back a bit, and play and/or smash his guitar, at will. And Daltrey had his songwriter, his Lieber-Stoller, his Lennon-McCartney, his Richards-Jagger, without having to lift a finger, lyrically. But Daltrey DID give Townshend's words and music a life, and an intensity, and a volume, and a presence unmatched.

Now, it's down to The Two.

And ENDLESS WIRE exhibits both their talents, without hiding behind over-production or endless guitar tracks, or for that matter, without much support from the rhythm section.....no point. Pino Paladino is no more John Entwistle than Kenny Jones was Keith Moon.

So the only way ENDLESS WIRE could, in fact, be considered a Who album was to keep the others out of the kitchen, in the main. The result: more acoustic tracks, even with only Pete singing, but especially in duet with Roger, than you'd expect from an album branded by The Who.

But it IS a Who album.

I dare you to listen to "Mike Post Theme" and tell me it's not.

Free Music Review: With Two it's still The Who

Keith Moon and John Entwhistle can never be replaced, though the Moon of Who Are You was greatly diminished from the man who was possibly the greatest drummer ever during the time of Who's Next and Quadrophenia.

Pound for pound, ounce for ounce there has never been a band better than The Who. Electric live, amazing in the studio with thought provoking music with some humor provided by Entwhistle. John Entwhistle's mastery of the bass and pretty much every brass instrument is still jaw dropping.

That band is gone, but two of the talents live on and DO continue to embody the spirit of The Who and thus deserve to keep the name.

I would have dismissed this album outright had I cast it aside after my first listen. Thank goodness I listened again and refused to hold Moon and Entwhistle's death against Pete and Roger.

This album is not Who's Next, Sell Out, or Quadrophenia but it never tries to be. It's very grown up and well executed. These are men who have lived through their friends dying, who have lived through heart ache, addiction, and so much more. They can still show us where The Who would be today.

Zak Starkey only appears on one track, Black Widow's Eyes. It's too bad he was working with Oasis because I think he could have provided some improvement, but the drumming is pretty good for the most part. I just love Starkey's sense of where fills need to go and how they need to sound - he's from the Keith Moon school where merely keeping the beat isn't acceptable. Fortunately Townshend knows this too and the drummers don't do much flat drumming.

Palladino plays a bouncy bass. The lines aren't as sophisticated as Entwhistle's nor does he try to figure out what John would have done, but he also doesn't play much flat bass, especially on the Wire & Glass mini opera. It's superior to what most other bands have got nowadays.

This new rhythm section IS NOT Keith and John but they do perform in their spirit, knowing that bass and drums are more than just pace setters or pace keepers. The drums and bass are not glorified metronomes.

Thanks Roger and Pete for doing this. I wish all you guys were still here, but you've at least shown us where everyone would be now and you've once again woken the passion of The Who.

Free Music Review: THERE REALLY IS SOME GOOD MATERIAL HERE, I MEAN COME ON!!!!!, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? "WHO'S 5 Stars

I enjoyed "Endless Wire" immensely. I did'nt like it at first listen, after seven listens of this 58min.-57sec. cd it has grown on me. I have read alot of negative reviews, I do respect other peoples opinions. When I heard The Who was coming out with a new cd, I was'nt expecting the likes of "Who's Next" or "Quarophenia",I expected a release like "Endless Wire". Roger Daltry, Pete Townshend are in their sixties and without Keith Moon and John Entwistle. Townshend plays a great guitar and other instruments. Daltrys voice is older but he has his shining moments on this cd. Zak Starkey is an incredible drummer and only played on track 5 "Black Widow's Eyes (one of the best tracks on the cd) because he was touring with Oasis during the recording sessions of "Endless Wire". I look at "Endless Wire" as a recording with some really good material that needs to be listened to a few times to have it grow on you. I look foward to the next Who release where Daltry and Townshend will have exercised their talents on "Endless Wire" to make an even better Who recording. Hopefully Zak Starky will be doing all the drum work. Try to listen to "Endless Wire" a few times you may begin to like the material. The Who are older, and great days have passed them by, the dvd with this cd shows that, I still like "Endless Wire" despite the all the naysayers. If you are'nt expecting Who's Next (Deluxe Edition) you might enjoy "Endless Wire" as it does lean towards more of an acoustic sound. All I can say is I'm glad Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend are back making music together again.

Free Music Review: If you have a brain, buy this

Are you all idiots? This is not your daddy's Who. If all you care about is Who's Next, then listen to that endlessly. If you have a brain, realize that Roger is 62 and Pete is 61 and the other musicians on here are not John and Keith. Newsflash...they're dead. Newsflash 2....they're not coming back. Newsflash 3.....Pete and Roger are not interested in recreating what they did 36 years ago. Are you? If you allow them to age, allow them to explore new ground, allow them to experiment, allow them to grow, mature, create from what they feel given who they are now, and at the same time, allow them to kick butt, you might realize that this album is a pretty remarkable achievement. The music, the musicianship, the scope, the vocals, the originality, the sheer volume of work here...is remarkable. These guys are great. Appreciate them while they are still here. Roger is still bringing it. Pete still rocks and will always be underrated as a writer and a guitarist. This album is really cool for all the right reasons. An amazing achievement from two guys that still care enough to try. Buy it. There's nothing out there (currently) like this. If you don't like every song, so what? If you want to beat them up for not being 36 years younger than they are, you're missing the point. To paraphrase Quadrophenia, "You fellas wanna kill me? Oh f****** will you?"
