Free Music Review: Accurate reflection of how outstanding Wilco is live these days
Hit: 5 Stars

Ever since the long-delayed official release of 2002's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", Jeff Tweedy has done a lot of touring, both with Wilco and solo, and even with the band going through some line-up changes, if you have seen Wilco touring behind the "ghost is born" album, you know that this is one of the tighest-sounding bands on the road these days.

"Kicking Television: Live in Chicago" (2CDs, 23 tracks, 113 min.) brings the best of a 4 night stand at the Vic Theatre in Chicago in May, 2005. Rightfully so, the setlist is heavy on the YHF and ghost albums. For me the best song on the entire set is the 11+ min. epic "Spiders (Kidsmoke)", which live sounds miles better than it does on "ghost". The highlights are many: "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart", "Muzzle of Bees", "Poor Places" and the 2 Guthrie-worded songs "One by One" and "Airline to Heaven" (from the "Mermaid Avenue" CDs) are my personal favorites, but there really is no weak song on the entire album. The other band members are equally strong throughout.

If you've seen Wilco live, do yourself a favor and buy this, you won't be disappointed! In a sense, this live album almost feels like the closing of another chapter in Wilco's journey. Maybe Tweedy is ready to embark on another musical experiment altogether, to which I say: sign me up!

Free Music Review: A GREAT LIVE ALBUM
Hit: 5 Stars

Wilco has managed to pull off something which is becomming increasingly rare, a great live album. Numerous artists seem to be releasing live albums of late, but this is one that realy works as more than a souvenier of their live show.

The reason for the success of KICKING TELEVISION is that the band does not merely recreate the studio versions of the songs, but seems to change them from two dimensional into three. This is a potent version of the band that handle gentler songs such as ONE BY ONE or JESUS ETC., as well as powehouse tunes like KIDSMOKE (SPIDERS). I had been slightly underwhelmed by the bands last effort, A GHOST IS BORN, due to the songs not really asserting themselves. Well, each song from that album performed here, comes off much stronger than the original studio version.

KICKING TELEVISION is strong reminder of both the fact that the good live album is not extinct, and that Wilco remains one of the most talented outfits creating music today. Recommended to both old and new fans

Free Music Review: Great Mix, Great Show
Hit: 5 Stars

Nothing can quite match the experience of seeing Wilco live, particularly with the new 6 piece lineup. This CD does the best possible and is a great addition to the Wilco canon.

The mix is outstanding with the just the right amount of minimal crowd noise that makes all the difference on a live album. The mix is really great and easily surpasses any of the live bootlegs that have crosses my path.

While many of the diehards will lament the absence of early songs off of AM, Being There, and Summerteeth, the song selection is pretty good and a good representation of a single show (though this was recorded over a four-night stand). I was particularly pleased with "Via Chicago" and the two Mermaid Aven. selections "One By One" and "Airline to Heaven".

The true blessing of this CD is the new energy in the AGiB songs.
While the record was good, the live versions with Pat Sassone and more importantly Nels Cline are phenomanal. "Spiders" alone is worth the price of admission.

Free Music Review: Best of 2005: There's no place like home...
Hit: 5 Stars

Life is better when you're home. This is the case of this live album, where Wilco gives the best of each band member while they deliver the performance of a lifetime in their hometown of Chicago throughout each of the 23 songs.

Having heard the band play live during their visit to Orlando in early 2005, listening to this performance sent me back to the day I saw them play at House of Blues, a day that left an indelible memory in my mind. With Jeff Tweedy also fronting the band, though with a shorter set than the one "Kicking Television: Live in Chicago" offers, they impressed me as one of the best and most true-to-form live acts I've ever seen.

This album takes my impression of the band a step further, with impeccable renditions of the best from their last two albums along with a handful of classic Wilco tunes. It easily qualifies as one of the best live albums to come along in a long time, and one of 2005's best.

Free Music Review: A Great Live Album From a Great Live Band
Hit: 5 Stars

I've seen Wilco live at least a dozen times and was about 3 rows back at the Vic on May 4th, when this album was being recorded. If you've never seen Wilco live, you need to run out and buy this CD, because as good as YHF, A Ghost is Born etc., are, the studio recordings only hint at what an amazing band Wilco really is. Part of the joy of seeing them live is feeling the connection that Wilco has with their fans, and as much as it is possible to feel through a CD player, you feel. Jeff Tweedy sounds confessional, and the band moves between intimate moments and explosive sound. Wilco becomes increasing more and more experimental each time I see them, and this live album reflects that experimentation. If you love WIlco, you need to own this CD.
