Free Music Notes for Kicking Television: Live in ChicagoFree Music Review: Great CD Hit: 5 Stars
This is just a great, fun concert experience. Wilco's albums are fabulous, but live they are at a whole other level. This album captures all of that.
The sound, right from the soundboard, is crisp, but there is still enough crowd noise on the album to elevate it beyond just a rehash of their CDs.
One issue I had . . . and I'm not sure if others have had . . . on my CD player it played great. But, when I uploaded it onto the iPod, there was some weird static. I hope Wilco's label didn't add this onto the tracks to keep people from pirating or whatever. It's a little annoying, but not enough to ruin the CD.
Keep the music coming, Wilco!
Free Music Review: Alt. Country meets noise jazz Hit: 5 Stars
Wow. Like peanut butter and jelly, mixing alternative country rockers Wilco (as if Tweedy and company can be that easily pigeon-holed) with noise-jazz improvisational guitarist Nels Cline has created an unforseen musical marriage made in Heaven. Haunting melodies, biting lyrics ... and now, meaningfully edgy instrumental accompaniament and solos to drive the whole message home with a flourish. Bravo! I, for one, hope that this meeting of spirits can continue.
The only slight downside is the lack of material from earlier studio albums A.M. and Being There. But considering the quality of the music on the discs, you will soon forget all about that omission.
Free Music Review: Didn't know the studio versions could get better Hit: 5 Stars
Wow.
I don't like live albums, but love this. Wasn't sure that the studio versions could get better, until I saw Wilco live in LA. This album even puts that show to shame.
If you love YFH and Ghost, you'll find your favorites here. All songs are true to the original but somehow brought even more to life. Whatever made each song great is intensified and so vital.
Only half complaint is this version of Heavy Metal Drummer. It always was their most "big rock show" friendly song, but somehow didn't translate as well on the live album for me.
Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Second only to live Wilco, this is their best work, period. Hit: 5 Stars
I have little to add to the points made by other reviewers here but to emphasize that Wilco is at their best live, and this record is at the top of my list of great live albums. Every track on this double CD is a fresh, and to my mind superior, version of the original studio recordings. "Kicking Television" spent six months in steady rotation on my vehicle's audio system and I still find it great road food. Highly recommended for adventurous rock fans who appreciate an innovative band that isn't afraid to experiment or draw on diverse influences and make them their own.
Free Music Review: ya.. its good Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this out of impatience to hear the upcoming album... i needed some Wilco with Nels. I personally feel this is the best direction they could have gone, and for my taste this will probably be the apex of Wilco's career. The songs still deliver all of the impact as far as lyrics and melody go, but with Nels, they have elevated thier music sonically. There are only a few tracks i find slightly dissapointing but the sheer brilliance of others (Misunderstood, via chicago, etc) far outweighs the weaker tracks, hence 5 stars instead of 4. Its worth it, get it.
