Free Music Notes for Kicking Television: Live in ChicagoFree Music Review: Perfect time... Hit: 5 Stars
...for them to release a live album. At home at the Vic Theater, at a great time for the band. The new guitarist really adds depth to the band that was lacking after the departure of Jay Bennett. Maybe a little over the top (Handshake Drugs) at times, but in general, he really adds a ton to the sound that is the new Wilco. A good mix of the old and new. As to the comment that there is nothing from AM, I say, good. Just my opinion. Still have Misunderstood, Shot in the Arm...surprisingly, no California Stars, though. Sound quality is excellent. Buy it.
Free Music Review: Peak Performance Hit: 5 Stars
This is, simply put, Wilco at their best...everything they've been working towards with their last few records really gels here...These songs, including some that seemed like too arty-farty experimental stuff, bloom here...Everything works here, from the horn section to the occassional blasts of noise employed to great effect on several tracks...
A career high, culminating in an extremely felt, emotional take on Charles Wright's "Comment": an extremely apropos statement about the world we find ourselves living in today.
Free Music Review: Show-Stopper Hit: 5 Stars
This is an amazing recording! I was just introduced to the band live in Asheville, NC a month or so ago. I didn't know any of the songs but loved every one for different reasons. This recording brought back the entire show to the forefront of my brain. The writing is so subtle yet the technique so good. This is one of the freshest things I have heard in years. If you are a Wilco fan, you will not be disappointed in this CD. If you're not one yet, it may make you consider seeing and hearing more of this band.
Free Music Review: As good as being there Hit: 5 Stars
This album clearly defines why Wilco is the best band touring today or any day. The connection that Tweedy makes with the audience is crystal clear, as is the harmonious instrumentation that this current line-up display. Each musician in the band is a virtuoso in his own right, and Nels Cline sharp guitar is a welcome addition indeed. I usually don't like live albums, as the audience noise is a distraction, but it is clear on this recording that the audiecne was too much in awe to get in the way.
Free Music Review: A Great Live Album Hit: 5 Stars
This album may not be for everyone, but this is where I feel Wilco really shines. It makes their music from A Ghost is Born more accessible, and more over it rocks. Jeff Tweedy and the current line up of the band hit their groove just like they did back on Being There. This is more than a worthy addition to their catalogue. I think it belongs with Being There, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and the Mermaid Avenue Albums as among their best. And that ain't shabby.
