Free Music Notes for Sky Blue SkyFree Music Review: AGreat Album By My Favorite Band Hit: 5 Stars
I have only been a fan of Wilco for a little over a year now but when I got each album of theirs they always had a great deal of growth musically from album to album. I saw Wilco play live last year in Huntsville and they played 3 of the songs on this album that night. Is this album mellow? Yes. Is this album terrible? Hell No. The band has gone in a direction that let's the songs shine and the simplicity of these songs are what makes this album great. I read a comment made by Jeff Tweedy about this album where he said this time around he wanted to put songs on this album that you could put in your pocket and go. What does that mean? It means that this time around he wanted the songs to shine on their own and not have to worry about having a specific effect pedal or sound that went into playing the song live to recreate that sound off of the album. This is a great album and frankly there is not a bad song on here. I have not bought the cd for this album yet so I am not sure if the song Let's Not Get Carried Away is a hidden track on this album or not it is on the Itunes version Though. If it is not on the cd I suggest you download it because it was one of the songs that they have played on encore's in their last tours and it is a great song.
Free Music Review: Better with Time Hit: 5 Stars
I waited to review this album, because like some, i was a bit disappointed too. But i told myself i would wait and see what direction the album took me in, and i have to say, this was the perfect album for Wilco to make at this point in their career, they couldn't have done another Y.H.F. or A.G.I.B. nor did they return to their roots, it doesnt sound like their first 3 records, it sounds like a completely different band/songwriter and isn't that what we want from our musical leaders? I know i do. Anyways, i am absolutly in love with Sky Blue Sky, it really does feel like being wrapped in a blanket, it is one of the warmest sounding records i have ever heard, it truly is, i have heard people saying that before but i never truly understood it until S.B.S. The Songs are some of the best of their career and it is truly a great record for the Ages. Show me another band that can take over someone's life, has a wild/exciting back catalog, puts on a great live show, and is not concerned with being lame rockstars and i will delete my review. A+. Thank You For Your Time. Buy Wilco's Sky Blue Sky.
Free Music Review: Impossibly genuine..... Hit: 5 Stars
I've read many reviews for this album, and some of them were downright aggressively angry and bitter. This is a beguiling album, another chapter in a band that is probably the most underrated, underappreciated band working today. While grunge exploded in the 1990's and was being thrust in our faces, these guys were making really amazing music completely under the radar, and while the grunge bands have either splintered or are just former fragments of what they used to be, Wilco is still standing, getting better with each album. I find this album charming, etheral, and solidly Wilcoish. It's really beautiful, especially the single What Light and Either Way. Nels Cline's guitar work really gives this album a unique sound. Jeff Tweedy is a great band leader as well as a great songwriter/musician. He chooses his musicians with the same great care he writes his songs. I don't understand why so-called longtime fans of Wilco hate this so much. It's not Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost is Born, A.M., Mermaid Avenue, Being There, Summerteeth, etc., etc., it's Sky Blue Sky.
Free Music Review: Best album yet Hit: 5 Stars
I struggled for quite some time before I liked Sky Blue Sky, and for that reason one might truthfully say that I wouldn't like this album if it weren't Wilco's. But I'm being completely honest when I say it's not only their most honest but also their best overall album. Two things struck me at first - there were some duds ("Shake it Off," "Hate it Here" among others) and the ones I did like were pretty slow and similar to one another. It turns out neither of these observations are true if you give it enough time, and especially if you see them play these tunes live. The "duds" I mentioned are now favorites after I've heard them performed the way they were meant to be, by the best live band out there. And if you don't like amazing songs like "Either Way" and "Impossible Germany" right off the bat, there's something wrong with you. This record sees Nels Cline in the spotlight and doing some pretty cool things with it, and his prowess is something you have to witness on stage. I really hope this lineup stays together for a while and we get to hear more of their genius.
Free Music Review: Pleasantly Surprised Hit: 5 Stars
After the boring drones and forgettable melodies of "A Ghost Is Born", I was a bit afraid of what "Sky Blue Sky" would sound like... But I liked it immediately. There is not one unlikeable track on this album, and it's a pleasant, beautiful, melodic listen all the way through. The synthesizers that Jim O'Rourke didn't quite seem to know how to incorporate into Wilco songs are almost completely taken from the mix and replaced by organs.
Although this is a country-tinged alt-folk album, this is definitely not a return to old-form. They are still evolving, and it sounds a lot softer than their first couple of albums. This new album also strays from the long, meandering instrumental sections that seem to go nowhere. Here, there are only a few extended instrumentals, and they're quite entertaining, and you can tell that it's going to go somewhere (Check out "Impossible Germany".) The new guitarist puts a nice jazzy spin on some parts, as well.
Some favorites on this album are "Either Way", "Impossible Germany", and "Walken." Check it out, yo.
