Free Music Notes for Wilco (The Album)Free Music Review: "Country Disappeared" is of the times Hit: 5 Stars
I never could get into Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but it seems to be a collection with some staying power. I find a lot to like on this CD. There's a progression between the two albums, and I would say this one is more refined, certainly more fun, actually.
For me, the best song is Country Disappeared, which does not suggest 'fun'. While it is basically downbeat, maybe even bleak, it catches the mood of early 2009 like no song I have run across. It is, I suppose, the emotional opposite of Coldplay's big hit. I am impressed that Wilco can craft a great little song, full of sonic nuance, that just feels right. The instrumentation reflects a group of people who can do what they want to do, and they can do something serious with a lot of light, almost joyous, overtones. The song says there is a lot not to like, out there, but such is the nature of life.
Wake up we're here
It's so much worse than we feared
There's nothing left here
The country has disappeared
If the winter trees bleeding, leave red blood
The summer sweet dreaming, april blush
But none of that is ever gonna mean as much to me again.
I think this is how life works. Bad experiences don't drain the world of the 'April blush', but they drain our capacity to enjoy it. There's nothing in this song about greed and financial collapse or Bernie Madoff, but it has the feel of the times. It's also a song about reaching out, a song with some undercurrent of hope. I hope the hope is the 'right' hope, as we move forward.
I won't take no
I won't let you go
All by yourself
Oh no you need my help
When the cold night shakes you like a chandelier
The snowflakes break through the atmosphere,
and melt on the blue breath of the auctioneers and disappear.
Free Music Review: One of 2009's Best! Hit: 5 Stars
I have listened to and enjoyed Wilco on and off for the past several years after being turned on to them by an old high school friend, but none of what I heard previously really prepared me for the glorious batch of songs that comprises Wilco (The Album). If this is not the best CD of 2009, it is certainly one of them!
There is not a bad song on the album and there is a diversity of styles that evokes some of the most creative writers in the music business. This album cements songwriter Jeff Tweedy in their league. On Wilco (the song) I hear echoes of Stephen Malkmus and his old band Pavement. On Deeper Down, Country Disappeared, and Everlasting Everything I sense the muse of Elvis Costello nodding approvingly, and on You Never Know I hear joyful echoes of George Harrison. But on my favorite cut, I'll Fight, I hear pure Jeff Tweedy.
Since there have been so many other reviews, most of them positive, I won't natter on. I just want to add my voice to the growing chorus that hears something special here. The CD comes with an attractive booklet that contains pictures, lyrics, and just minimal album information. If you want to know more, a note on the back page will guide you to the band's website. Get Wilco (The Album) as soon as possible so you can hear what you've been missing!
Free Music Review: A return to the OLD Wilco sound... Hit: 5 Stars
This is the album for Wilco fans who still think Being There and Summerteeth are their best efforts. I truly disliked Ghost, and while Sky had a few good moments, I also found it a disappointment.
Tweedy is back to just writing good songs. Simple, to the point, and with his influences as bright as those suits they wore on the Tonight Show.
Solitaire is one of the best things he's written in years (at least since Yankee). In it he beautifully evokes the spirit of Nick Drake's Pink Moon, while still making it pure Wilco bliss.
I can't say that there's a weak tune on the cd. Wilco (the song) just makes me smile, as does the duet with Feist. One Wing and You Never Know showcase Tweedy's amazing lyrics. Every listen brings out some layer that you missed the first time around. Musically, well, it's Wilco. Is there a better band on the planet? No.
In a year which has brought us very little good new music (or at a time when rock has taken a dive into the gutless wimpy toilets of Grizzly Bear and Vampire Weekend), this album is a godsend.
Right now it gets my vote for album of the year, pushing Ida Maria's debut to the second spot on that list.
It rocks, it rolls, it's got heart.
Free Music Review: WILCO evolving with Nels Cline Hit: 5 Stars
I had to put in my 2 cents...
Been a WILCO fan from near the beginning...enjoying every turn along the way...enjoying their music, both live & on CD [would love to get some vinyl!] and mourning Jay Bennett's recent passing.
I just saw them at Coney Island, NY at a minor league baseball stadium...around the corner from Mermaid Avenue [the same one Woody Guthrie lived at & wrote about...also featured in WILCO's repertoire]...fantastic show, which included Leslie Feist and Ed Droste [Grizzly Bears] as guest vocalists, as well as Yo La Tengo [the opening act]...GREAT SHOW.
Jeff Tweedy is the core of WILCO, but Nels Cline, in its latest incarnation, has infused the music with a delightful intensity.
This CD, as well as "Sky Blue Sky," are must haves for any WILCO fan...and, judging by the size of the crowd, and the age group, the band is really developing a following.
Free Music Review: Blindingly Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
I'll be quick. Every summer an album bubbles to the top in terms of playtime and ultimatley dleivering as the soundtrack for my summer. Summer 2008 it was The National, Boxer. 2009 it is Wilco (the album)... I love the depth & concision of this record. In the day of the single song downloads OR the 90 minute meandering CD, this one stands out as clocking in at an eloquently concise 43 minutes - delivering the necessary range and depth but departing leaving the listener wanting more. Just right for side one and side two of the vinyl pressing (remember side 1 and 2?). Tweedy's songs are deeply personal and are complimented by equally personal playing from the band. The chemistry, comfort and confidence here are undeniable. Thanks Guys!
Just praying they schedule some Northwest dates as they never dissapoint live. Enjoy!!
