This is a collection of more unreleased songs the late William Clarke recorded in the 70's and very early 80's. According to his wife, Jeanette Clarke Lodovici, William got these tapes from Pacifica Studios in L.A. just a couple days before his untimely death in 1996. They were all at least 15 years old at the time, and are a real treasure to listen to.
All the songs here (12 in all) are fully produced and the sound quality is excellent. Clarke's harp playing is outstanding, as usual. Clarke's musical style is truly unique, and blends 12 bar Chicago blues with West Coast blues, but there are also elements of jazz and jump blues. Clarke listened to a lot of harmonica players through the years, and personally learned a lot about Chicago blues from Muddy Waters alumnus George "Harmonica" Smith and also from Shakey Jake Harris, and appeared on several of the latter's songs.
The liner notes are a bit on the lean side. The featured harmonica players listed are Mitch Kashmar on "Now That You're Gone," George Smith on "Feel Like a King" and "Love You, Yes I Do," and Clarke pal Joe Lodovici, who blows some very tasty notes on "Can't You Hear Me Calling." Clarke handles the rest of the harmonica work, as well as all the vocals. Other musicians include Hollywood Fats, Ronnie Earl, Jr. Watson, Bill Stuve and Fred Kaplan. Liner notes don't list song credits or who's playing when, but i'm guessing that the blistering guitar work on the final track "Watson, I Presume" is West Coast guitarist Jr. Watson.
This is another great addition to the William Clarke catalog. If you're as big a fan of harmonica blues as i am, this album will be a great addition to your collection.
