Free Music Review: A Treasure Trove

This disc holds two broadcast recordings by William Kapell that were discovered and issued in 2002. For me, the gem is the recording of the Rachmaninov Second Concerto with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic. This recording was mode on February 18, 1951, it truly seems that conductor, and soloist intended on making it a memorable occasion. The first movement is played with great feeling for the music and a freshness and passion that some recordings lack. There was scattered applause following the movement. The middle movement is filled with a melancholy urgency, beautifully phrased and moving. The Finale is driven and energetic with a marvelous interplay between soloist and orchestra. The sound is, of course, mono but is distortion free. I have quite a few recordings of the Rachmaninov Second and this one ranks at the top. Even if you have more performances of this concerto this one is one to buy.
The Khachaturian Piano Concerto has come to be associated with William Kapell, an association he resented. Kapell's recording with Serge Koussevitzky is famous but this one was made around the same time with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy, one of Kapell's mentors. The Khachaturian has been criticized for being crass and bombastic but if played well, as it was by William Kapell and Moura Lympany, the concerto can be very moving and exciting. This recording measures well against the Koussevitzky but the sound quality is not well balanced and is dry. There is no significant distortion but the sound is not as good as the Rachmaninov. Still, it is an exciting performance and the ear adjusts to the quality of the sound.
