Free Music Notes for Moment Of Forever AlbumFree Music Review: Not an "Evil Twin" in sight... Hit: 4 StarsI love Willie, but the quality of his albums over the last few years has been wildly inconsistent. Several of his recent albums rank among his finest works, but a couple are just kind of rank, and can only be explained by my "Evil Twin Theory." Fortunately, we get the genuine Willie Nelson on "Moment of Forever."
Vocally, Willie sounds better than he has on some of his other recent albums. Although he will be 75 years old next month, you wouldn't guess it from "Moment." This is an album that is fun and full of life, but includes some very touching and poignant moments.
Much of the credit probably goes to Buddy Cannon and Kenny Chesney, who produced the album. Additionally, the song selection this round is an especially good fit. I tend to most enjoy the songs that Willie writes, but he does has a keen sense for picking great songs to cover.
Willie wrote or co-wrote three of the songs on "Moment." My favorite is "You Don't Think I'm Funny Anymore," which somehow makes me laugh every time I hear it. It's probably the last two lines of the song, which I won't spoil here.
"Moment of Forever" and "When I Was Young and Grandma Wasn't Old" are the two best songs on the album, and sound like they are written by Willie.
"Moment of Forever" is a beautiful, almost melancholy ballad that reminds me of "Forgiving You Was Easy" or "Angel Flying Too Close." It was actually written by Kris Kristofferson & Danny Timms, but it is classic Willie.
"When I Was Young and Grandma Wasn't Old" is a touching tribute from Willie to the grandmother who raised him. Willie has a wonderful talent for making a moving song that doesn't sound contrived. Props to Buddy Cannon who wrote "When I Was Young" but gave it Willie's voice.
You may have heard "Gravedigger" or seen the video on CMT. This is the first single from "Moment" but it took a couple of listens for me to "get" it. From the Dave Matthews Band, this may be the most unlikely cover on the album, but when you listen to the lyrics of "Gravedigger," it actually has a bit a Johnny Cash flavor to it, and Willie does a great job covering it. Regardless of the result, I appreciate that Willie never panders or talks down to his audience.
"Keep Me From Blowing Away" is a song I already knew and loved from the Linda Ronstadt box set. I was excited to see it on the track list, and I wasn't disappointed when I heard it. It's just a wonderfully written song given a typical, nice performance by Willie.
"Gotta Serve Somebody" is another notable track. Of course, this is a cover of the Bob Dylan classic. While Willie's version isn't exactly groundbreaking, it is quite enjoyable.
Stylistically, "Moment" reminds me of "Stardust" and some of the other records Willie made around that time. "The Bob Song" departs a bit further from the norm than any of the other tracks, but it doesn't depart all that far. "Bob" is a simple, but fun song courtesy of Big Kenny.
My least favorite song on the album is the duet with Kenny Chesney "Worry B Gone." I'm sure the song was done in fun, but I don't think drug abuse is quite as funny we sometimes treat it, and I feel a little uncomfortable listening to Willie sing "Gimme just one puff (or sip) of that Worry B Gone."
That aside, this is a collection of well written songs, and Willie & company are in fine form.
What a wonderful world.
