Free Music Review: Winged Migration is a Magnificent Heartbreak
Hit: 5 Stars

Do nothing else while this film is on your television screen! From the spectacular worldwide scenery from the bird's point of view to the tragic encounters with hunters, harvesters and city sludge, the journey is a mesmerizing montage of weather systems, avalanches, mating rituals, family times and the powerful soundtrack anchored by a one-of-a-kind panting chorus to illustrate the exhaustion of the exertion these birds put out to make their 1800 mile to 3600 mile journeys. As astounding as is the film itself, the story of its making is equally important, with commentary from the filmmakers which illustrates the background of the entire documentary -- showing us the photographers, ultralights, conditions from desert to jungle to tundra and the small groups of home raised birds taught to follow their humans so that the humans can then follow them in flight. Never sentimental but always emotional, this is the story of the fragility of life itself, as well as the heartfelt involvement of the filmmaking crews to whom the birds they raise are family. One of many special moments is a picture taken from a boat in a waterway with the birds flying close alongside, during which one of the filmmakers simply cannot help but reach out and place his hand underneath the belly of the nearest laboring goose as it flies, clearly seeking to assist the gallant creature. I watched this documentary repeatedly as a rental, and then purchased a copy to continue watching it, repeatedly. This is a masterwork, reflecting us back to ourselves from the point of view of what might seem the frailest and most fragile of our earthly brethren, but is instead one of its most courageous.

Free Music Review: Beautiful Images; Beautiful Music
Hit: 5 Stars

I disagree that the soundtrack detracts from the film. I walk by a movie theatre nightly on my way home, and, not having enjoyed MicroCosmos at all, I was avoiding this film due to the association. One night however, I needed something to relax and unwind after a terrible day at the office. Within the first few minutes of Winged Migration, I was awestruck, and, various scenes made me gasp aloud -- the migration over the Great Wall of China was almost a fantasy painting, as is the aerospace view looking down on white geese crossing the Earth. I too, came away with a more respectful attitude to the planet, grasping at once that the few "ugly" scenes of the birds waddling through muck were the result of man, not nature. Accompanying all of this beautiful visual imagery was a soundtrack which at times was amusing, timing classical rhythyms with the mating dance of birds, at times restful and serene, and at times energizing. The music is not non-stop throughout the movie, but instead, fades in and out as a gentle reminder that music, too, is a gift, whether man-made, or bird-made. I came away from the film feeling as if I'd just taken a one hour stress break, and immediately wanted the soundtrack.

Free Music Review: A Very Special Film Score
Hit: 5 Stars

One is at first reluctant to write yet another user review given the extremely high accolades already contained in the many fine reviews. But the score of Winged Migration is so outstanding that it almost compels one to share thoughts and, most importantly, express gratitude to the composers and artists. If there is anything more beautiful than the film's cinematography it is indeed the spiritual, uplifting, and poignantly melodic score that moves the listener to a very emotional place each time the music is heard. Though not exclusively so, the score has a special focus on choral, chant, and other vocal music with many tones and melodies both contemporary and traditional. The film's composer comments in one of the DVD's special features that some of his vocalists could sing the phone book and make it sound moving. The score is so extraordinary that it truly belongs alongside much more widely recognized masterpieces such as Dances With Wolves. As with Dances, the score of Winged Migration separates itself from the film and stands alone as an amazing symphony that no appreciator of music should miss hearing in his lifetime. Though this music is timeless, we are not.

Free Music Review: This is the Best Soundtrack in Years
Hit: 5 Stars

The music in this soundtrack is beautiful music, very serene and relaxing. And, if you listen to the words of the songs, you will understand what this music is all about. There is a song that sounds like a Tribe of Indians performing a ritual in honor of our feathered friends, the birds, which I found to be very unique. There is the sound of beating drums. All of the instruments are very good. You can even hear the geese in the background to some of the music. I also saw the movie. I plan to purchase it on VHS when it comes out on November 18th. This is definitely a movie and CD that everyone should have in their library. After you have seen the movie, you will have greater appreciation for the music that goes along with it. The birds in flight take us to a higher perspective on life and all of its struggles. If one misses the opportunity to listen to the CD or see the movie, they are missing out on alot. For after listening to the CD and seeing the movie, I feel it has greatly enriched my life and made me more in tune to nature.

I recommend this very highly.
