Free Music Notes for WintersunFree Music Review: Beautiful Musicianship Hit: 5 Stars
Only 8 songs. Average song length would be close to 7 minutes. The compositions are dynamic, leading from symphonic strings and bells into some of the best speed-metal riffs in existence. Jari uses a 6 string attack, and he sticks to normal tuning--no dropped playing here. These songs have a very classical feel... his vocals are much better than traditional "death metal." He sounds closest on his growls to Dark Tranquillity. There is all sorts of singing as well, he goes from power metal and death metal at perfect times, as someone else stated, his concept of timing on this is perfect for the passage at hand. It's been a very difficult record for me to stop playing, but you can't listen to it on short car trips... you won't have enough time to listen to it all. Impeccable, impressive, the best death metal I've heard and a very refreshing interpretation at that.
Free Music Review: Ensiferum's Jari Maenpaa sure does have talent! Hit: 5 Stars
For melodic metal fans that are looking for a new favorite cd, look no further. If you have ever heard of or listen to Ensiferum, well, their main man Jari Maenpaa decided to go off and do his own solo work, and thus Wintersun emerges! Writing the lyrics and music for the guitars and keyboards, with Kai Hahto writing and playing the drums, he definitely made a good choice, though Ensiferum was awesome as well. The best way for me to describe the music style is to say it's a close cross of Children of Bodom's style of music and Yngwie Malmsteen's radical guitar style of music, and it definitely comes together to sound unique. As far as vocals, Jari has an excellent growl and surprisingly just as good clean vocal style. 5 of 5 for the excellent writing and performance. Melo-metal fans, give 'em a try...
Free Music Review: Surprisingly fresh and entertaining Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this with the knowledge that it was primarily melodic death metal. This knowledge comes with another piece of knowledge, being that the melodic death metal scene is overcrowded with Gothenburg sound-alikes. At first listen, I was only semi-entertained by "Beyond The Dark Sun", but as I listened on to tracks like the Norse-like "The Death And The Healing" and the epic "Starchild" I realized that Wintersun is head and shoulders above the rest of their contemporaries. I should add that Ive never listened to any of Jari's other bands like Ensiferum. Anyways..the musicianship is absolutely top notch, Jari tears it up with chops never seen on a Telecaster(except for Richie Kotzen), and the lyrics are inspiring. Overall spectacular release, and Im looking forward to hearing more from Wintersun.
Free Music Review: Very Strong! Hit: 5 Stars
Great melodic death/folk metal from Wintersun! A bit too tinged with power metal for my tastes, but still a great album. The songs here are all strong, and I like this more than anything Ensiferum has ever done.
Occasionally harsh, regularly epic in nature, and just a great album all around. The highlight, for me, is "Starchild," though "Death and the Healing" is also a favorite, as is the closer, "Sadness and Hate."
A key to making the album as epic as it is is the choice to put the tracks in sequential order by length. As each track is longer than the last, the album gains a more epic feel as it goes on. I'm unsure of whether this was intentional, but it works very well.
Great album...and I can't wait for the much anticipated follow-up, Time.
Free Music Review: triumphant epic melodic death Hit: 5 Stars
This cd is truly a masterpiece. Since Eternal Tears of Sorrow is no more I'll venture to say this is the best band coming out of finland right now. I've always been a fan of jari's work in ensiferum but never would I have expected him to pull something like this off. It almost seems that him playing in ensiferum actually held him back somewhat. The first thing that really caught my attention was the guitar playing. The rhythm guitars are as solid as I've ever heard with tons of melody. Lead guitars are all over the place with plenty of neo-classical runs and sweeps at rediculous speeds. This is probably the best release of 2004. This isn't another children of bodom, norther, or kalmah copy as many finnish bands seem to fall in line with. Do yourself a favor and buy this.
