Free Music Notes for WintersunFree Music Review: Amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is amazingly epic. Jari Mäenpää's musical genius is apparent in every track; especially because he did everything on this album, besides the drums --he even produced it himself. Jari mixes in clean vocals (which are some of the best clean vocals in metal) with growls, and packages it all up with great melodies and killer guitar solos. The end product is an album that is emotionally effective, heroic, uplifting, morbid, and just pure awesome. Not only is the music out of this world, but the lyrics are well written and powerful.
I'm a big fan of Finnish metal; and if you like other Finnish bands, chances are you'll like Wintersun. If you aren't a fan of Finnish metal, this album will probably get you hooked.
Free Music Review: Pure, Utter, Genius! Hit: 5 Stars
At first, this album seemed to be just an impulse buy. When I had seen that Necrolord had done the cover art, I figured I couldn't go wrong, despite the fact that my instincts can be wrong. Not this time! This album has some of the best musicianship I have heard in years, maybe longer. Jari displays guitar work and songwriting that is second to none. The musicians he picked for this album, I mean, it sounds like they've been playing together forever(they probably have!) The time signatures are so unique and original. This is not your typical metal album.Do yourself a favor and get this album, if only for the songwriting, you will enjoy this CD from start to finish. This CD will be in my stereo for a while. A true masterpiece!
Free Music Review: Favorite new band this year! Hit: 5 Stars
Wintersun's 2004 self-titled debut is a monster Finnish melodic death record. Featuring Jari Maenpaa from Ensiferum on everything except drums, this Finnish duo sounds like another cousin (not clone) of Children of Bodom (a la Norther, Kalmah, Ensiferum, etc.), this band is incredible, with some very Laiho-like solos as well as some top-notch basslines. I haven't bought it yet, but I have listened to 2 full length tracks on the Nuclear Blast Germany website. I have viewed the video of opener "Beyond The Dark Sun," and that song is one of the best opening tracks I've ever heard. I've also streamed track 2, "Winter Madness," and it's a monster as well. Once I buy the album, I'll give you a full review.
Free Music Review: AXE ASSAULT!! Hit: 5 Stars
Wow. Some of the best metal bands on earth come from Finland. Finntroll, Norther, Moonsorrow, Ensiferum, Children of Bodom...Oh, and of course Wintersun. Need I say more?
The blazing fast guitar work on "Battle Against Time" is worth the price of this CD alone, but every other song on this album is also thoroughly enjoyable. This one will have you air guitaring and air drumming until your arms fall off. I'm actually having to type this with a pencil in my mouth, using the eraser to punch the keys on my keyboard.
Pop this CD into your player, crank up the volume and dim the lights, and prepare to be dragged far away to the frozen north.
Free Music Review: MADNESS! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is, as of right now, my favorite album of all time, why? Because it's original, beautiful, yet dark and heavy, and its just plain enjoyable. Wintersun plays a blend of many metal genres, including power metal, black metal, melodic death metal, and others. Though, Wintersun is none of these alone. The songs are epic and filled with emotion. The catchy riffs, solos, amazing drumming and haunting vocals really drive the mood of this album. If you are into old Children of Bodom, Ensiferum, and some other bands along those lines, but are looking for more...then look no farther. Wintersun by Wintersun is waiting for you.
