Free Music Review: A complete and utter onslaught Hit: 4 Stars
Wow. What a record. I had heard of this band on the internet somewhere, and I saw the album in Tower Records soon after, so I decided to pick it up. To say this album is "overlooked" is merely an understatement. From what I have seen, it has been almost completely ignored. Such a shame that is, because this is an incredible showcase of not only fantastic musicianship, but fantastic songwriting as well. Jari is extremely talented - he played every instrument on this recording, save for the drums (which are flawless by the way). The riffs are air tight and the solos fly and flow with crystal clear quality. The keyboards don't take a standout role so much here, but they certainly add depth and color to the sound. The main vocals are sharp and harsh, while the singing is of true Viking metal tradition, full of epicness and glory. Everything is mixed near-perfectly. The only drawback with this album is that many of the songs are in the same key, and while that isn't always a bad thing, it causes certain songs to somewhat bleed together here. In addition, as good as it is, it definitely sounds very much like a lot of other Finnish bands. Because of this, it is easy to see how Wintersun could be written off as a Bodom or Norther knock-off. However, while Children of Bodom are starting to compromise their own musical abilities, Wintersun pushes them to the fullest extent possible. I would hope that they continue raising the bar for themselves for their next album, (which hopefully will include a full band by then) so they can come tour America!
Highlights of this album include "Beyond the Dark Sun", "Battle Against Time", and "Death and the Healing".
Free Music Review: Another awesome Finnish metal band. Hit: 4 Stars
I bought this album solely on the fact that they were Finnish and followed the formula of guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. Along with bands like Norther, Kalmah, Imperanon, and Children of Bodom, the formula has yet to let me down. If this is what mainstream music sounds like in Finland, the mainstream folks over there should consider themselves blessed. Unlike American mainstream music, these guys are truly talented on their instruments, as well as excellent songwriters. I honestly don't know much about these guys other than what I have heard from the album, but I will say that if these guys are just following a fad in Finland, then I pray it continues. LONG LIVE FINNISH METAL!!!
