Free Music Review: Daughters of Oum Kalthoum

Fans of Arabic music should be familiar with Oum Kalthoum, the legendary Egyptian singer who pioneered the art of Arabic music in the early 20th century. What few people know or remember is that many other female vocalists played a major role in the development of Arabic music too. Perhaps this shouldn't be surprising, given that female vocals play such a major role in almost all forms of Middle Eastern music. On this CD then, finally we get to hear the sound of some of Oum Kalthoums contemporaries, and even competitors. Obviously al-Sitt herself makes an appearance, performing 'Qal eh Ya Hilif,' but so do many less familiar (but no less talented) names such as Fatimah Sirri, Nabawiyyah Ghazal, Rose Zahran and Sekinah Hassan. Zakariyah Ahmed makes a guest appearance, doing a duet with Ratibah Ahmed on 'Qabadan Qabadan,' while the Badi'ah Masabni Orchestra performs a wonderful instrumental number in the middle of the CD. But the main focus here is really the talented, and oft-forgotten, female vocalists of the 'Golden Age' of Egyptian/Arabic classical music. True, the recordings may show their age, but these are still glimpses of an all but forgotten gilded age. And the women on this CD sing with all the passion and intensity that you would expect. If you are at all familiar with the music of Oum Kalthoum, then you will know exactly what I am talking about. This album is more than just a gem of Arabic classical music from the golden age of the full, lush Cairo orchestras, it is literally a piece of history in and of itself. And the liner notes provide further information on the tracks, singers and genre. I strongly recommend anyone interested in old Arabic music check this CD out.
