Free Music Review: Sappy like good syrup.
Hit: 4 Stars

For a fan of bands like Wilco, Jayhawks, Blue Rodeo, Son Volt, and The Heartbreakers, this disc is as outright sappy poppy as I'd ever consider getting. But, I do like it...I like it alot. Sort of a guilty pleasure, like Wallflowers or Counting Crows, but folkier and with clearer influences. There is homage paid to the Stones, Beatles, and others. The Van Morrison comparisons aren't unfounded either. The instrumentation is nice, and there's a definite cultural sound to the melodies that keeps the sweet lyrics from falling into mainstream oblivion. Sound pretentious, don't I.

In short, this is a good sunny Saturday, drinking stout and dusting the apartment kind of disc. For those of us who like the pop point of references to guide our choice...think Gavin Rossdale crooning along to a Subdudes record. Saccharine enough to be featured on Dawson's Creek, twangy enough to sound rootsy. Is that some Dire Straits I hear? For all the comparisons, this album is more original art under the sun.

Free Music Review: Acoustic Genius-- Background music for life
Hit: 4 Stars

This is another one of those "unknown bands" that suddenly sneaks, up on you, and you wonder why you've never heard of them. Apparently these guys mainly play small venues, which is really appropriate, because they have a classicly intimate feeling. Very relaxing acoustic music-- almost a little folky, but in a good way. "Stay You"'s lyrics are really good, and the rest of the songs have the same feeling. You are instantly relieved to find someone who talks about real life things in such a great way. Not obtuse, but still meaningful. Play it in the car, it sounds best as you're driving.

Free Music Review: Great songwriting right here
Hit: 4 Stars

I listened to this CD at Tower Records and it immediately caught my melodic ear. Not an easy task considering my attention span for new music is about 10 seconds. The writer does use chord progressions that seem to ring familiar, but what's wrong with that. Nice arrangements, with a great voice. The lyrics seem to be meant for a younger female crowd, but that's the target market you want. I'm 41 and am still enjoying this album. Good job.

Free Music Review: Wood - Songs from Stamford Hill
Hit: 4 Stars

Great CD . It's one of those "getting hard to find" recordings from a one time band . James Maddock is a one of a kind singer /songwriter who is grossly under rated . If your a fan of James this is a must for your collection .

Free Music Review: Totally bland...
Hit: 1 Stars

This band sounds like a cross between Nils Lofgren, Neil Young & Bob Dylan. You are probably now thinking, "Sounds good." Problem is there is nothing special at all here. Totally bland.
