Free Music Notes for This Land Is Your Land: The Asch Recordings, Vol. 1Free Music Review: Timeless and real... Hit: 5 Stars
With MTV and record company buzzards destroying (trying to) popular music, sometimes it pays to look back at a piece of American musical history. In doing so, you can't go wrong with this cd. Most of the songs on here were written by Mr. Guthrie himself and you will recognize a few of them...his songs have become a part of the tapestry of Americana.
There are plenty of war songs, patriotic songs, rebellious songs, dust bowl/depression songs on here.
It is important that we continue to support albums like The Asch Recordings so it can become part of us and who we are. God forbid this music is ever forgotten. Woody Guthrie is no different than William Shakespeare and you will love any of the Asch Recordings...they are totally original and excellent.
Free Music Review: Great for traveling Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD because I was very tired of the same old kids music as we traveled. This is a nice collection of songs. Some of them are upbeat, some of them are nice even tempo and some of them are slow. There is a nice combination of songs. My children (ages 2 and 4) have really enjoyed the music. I will admit it's not their favorite CD, but they enjoy it and will sing along with some of the songs. Woody is truly a classic in music and well worth introducing children to and well worth revisiting as an adult. Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Essential Hit: 5 Stars
Anyone discovering Guthrie's music should start here. The basics are covered. I loved Track 23, Going Down the Road Feeling Bad, because I love the Grateful Dead and this song was so strong an inspiration on Garcia. Three versions of "This Land is Your Land" may seem excessive, but each is unique in its own way and serve to balance this CD. I'm buying vols. 2, 3 and 4 now, as soon as I have the money. Great sound quality, by the way...
Free Music Review: woody was quality Hit: 5 Stars
woody was quality. if you don't like this cd don't bother checking your ears, check for a pulse. these bucolic/industrial songs might sound a bit kind of antique, but they're as modern as anything. even bob (Johnson not Dylan) didn't pierce the heart like this. these here songs are sonic bullets and they do pierce my heart & each time i hear them i cry like rain. well, some of them at least
Free Music Review: Biting political and social commentary Hit: 5 Stars
Woody emphatically claims that we all have equal claim to this country, not just the rich or powerful. He supports the unions. He bemoans the grief of the dustbowl, the prejudice of the police, the closed doors against the poor, and other early to mid-20th century problems. He gives several shout outs to our soldiers fighting in WW2. He lauds power dams and the opportunity they represent.
