Free Music Notes for The W

Free Music Review: 3.5 For The W
Hit: 4 Stars

With the classics Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and Wu-Tang Forever far behind its now 2000. All wu members have drop classic solo albums and its now time for The W. i didnt find this album to be as bad as some might lead you to believe, but its only because im not looking at past works and im looking to the future. Dont expect to hear the hardcore wu that made them classic. This album is not bad production wise, and the lyrics are memorable at times. Chamber Music gets that album to a good start, was really feelin the beat. Careful (Click, Click) has a very weird flow and can be hard to listen to, but i don't mind it being i don't have another song that sounds like this. I loved the sample on Hollow Bones and i felt they killed it lyrically speaking, but the Oooh ooooh sample can get annoying extremely quick. Redbull was nice, always good to hear red and meth on a track. One Blood Under W was a favorite, loved hearing Junior Reid on a track and masta killa kills it as usual. i have always found ODB to be funny but on Conditioner he was not worth listening to, i know it was recorded on the phone while he was in jail. Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off) was no where near as good as the original but i loved the beat, for a commercial joint this song is dope. Let My Nig*as Live should have been better with nas on it but the let my ni*gaz live gets old and because of this i have never really put this track on replay. I Can't Go To Sleep is on of my favorites loved everything about it. Do You Really? (Thang, Thang) was never released as a commercial song, but it should have. i didnt like hear this on a wu album and could pass on this track. The Monument features a nice beat, but i didnt care for busta on this track. Gravel Pit is another commercial banger, that is not bad but not what you listen to wu tang for. Jah World is very interesting to listen to.

all and all this album it not bad. but not was i want to hear from wu.

The W Poster

The Wu-Tang Clan have slimmed down on their lean and mean third album, both in title and in content. Clearly having learned a lesson from the ostentatious affair that was their last group effort, Wu-Tang Forever, The W weighs in at a taut 13 tracks, with little, if any, extraneous self-righteous solipsism. RZA returns to the boards for all but one track and proves that Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was no fluke, manipulating ghoulish soul to chilling effect on "Hollow Bones" and dropping (and chopping) thunderous horns at the intro to "One Blood Under W" (which features a stellar turn from reggae don Junior Reid). The album's first two singles--"Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)" and "Gravel Pit"--are both fierce, propulsive numbers, inspiring the Wu collective--Ghostface Killah and Method Man in particular--to higher energy levels than they've displayed in years. Elsewhere, The W is Ghost's record, especially on the unhinged lament "I Can't Go to Sleep" and the prostrate plea "Jah World." Memorably, Snoop and ODB collaborate to comic effect on "Conditioner," and all the album's cameos--from Redman and Nas to Isaac Hayes and Busta Rhymes--show that the group is still as savvy as ever. On The W, the boasting is earned. --Jon Caramanica
