Koch Records have done us proud with this splendid tribute to the great Alfred Newman, meticulously played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
under the direction of Richard Kaufman.Six films are represented with two of them - DRAGONWYCK and BRIGHAM YOUNG making their debut on disc.
The album opens with an excellent reading of a 12 minute suite from the composer's historic score for WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939).'Cathy's Theme'
from this score is one of Cinema's most beautiful love themes and here its beauty is wonderfully maintained right through to the ethereal female
choral ending.
The 13 minute suite from PRINCE OF FOXES(1949)is the highlight of the album. For this swashbuckler - set in Italy at the time of the Borgias -
comes the marvellous 'Prelude', the Walton-like Scherzo for 'The Garden
Fete', 'Borgia's Triumphal March' and the gorgeous 'Camilla' one of the
composer's most beautiful melodic inspirations. Music from PRISONER OF
ZENDA(1937) is represented by a splendid 7 minute suite. Newman's Acadamy
Award nominated score for this classic story was reused note for note by composer Adolph Deautch in the 1952 MGM remake. DRAGONWYCK was a gothic melodrama made in 1946 and Newman's score was the best thing about it. Recorded here for the first time in this 8 minute suite is the eerie 'Main Title' and the sumptuous theme for 'Miranda' ( beautifully played by Gene Tierney) which segues into a beguiling waltz. Also here on this splendid album is a lovely reading of the 'Love Theme' from DAVID & BATHSHEBA (1951)which the composer called Rapture Of Love. The disc ends with a 5 minute suite from BRIGHAM YOUNG (1940)and easily discerned here in the march theme is the music the composer used for many Fox westerns throughout the forties.
A fine album all round which comes with a nice cover and a ten page booklet. The excellent notes are by the executive producer of the album
the late and lamented Tony Thomas, this being the last in a long list of
great albums he brought to us over the years.
