Hip hop and non hip hop fans alike will appreciate this album. highlight tracks include a redo of Kenny Rogers the gambler, and Thug angels.
Free Music Review: An Incredibly Mediocre Album Hit: 3 StarsWyclef always brings uniqueness to the music. When you listen to a Wyclef album, you know it's going to be somewhat different than the vast majority of other rap-oriented albums coming out. No disrespect intended, but when I read one reviewer mention that they heard "The Carnival" was good, but this is the only Wyclef album they own, and this is better, I actually chuckled out loud. "The Carnival" was almost a masterpiece. I wouldn't argue that it IS. This album has nice production, and as usual, some cool, melodic styles from Wyclef. He's great for displaying versatility. However, if somebody asked me which Wyclef album to buy, this IS NOT THE ONE. "The Carnival" destroys this album! One thing that annoyed me immensely is, although there's not much profanity on this album, anywhere there IS some, it's edited out. I figured I had an edited version, but upon researching the matter, I learned this is the ONLY VERSION of this album available. That's simply pitiful. Edit your own album, and then only release THAT version? Most foolish thing ever. An Incredibly Mediocre Album.
Free Music Review: the clef is back Hit: 5 Starsthis is the only wyclef album i own. i heard that the carnival is really good, but this is better. the ecleftic is a mixture of many different types of music, such as rap/hip-hop, r&b, reggae and rock this is what i think of the songs: 1. columbia records-a funny skit 2. where fugees at?-really good song about his former group, the fugees 5/5 3. kenny rogers - pharoahe monch dub plate-a strange mix of kenny rogers, clef and pharoahe. 4/5 4. thug angels (feat. small world)-a great song i think it was the 1st or 2nd single off the album 5/5 5. it doesn't matter (feat. the rock, melky sedeck)-not a bad song. a bit annoying though. very overrated 3.5/5 6. 911 (feat. mary j. blige)-a great song showing off the vocal abilities of queen mary j. 5/5 7. pullin' me in-probably one of the best songs on the album. cool beat 5/5 8. da cypha (feat. supreme c, mary antoinette, hope)-another amazing song. the guest artists are really good in this one. 5/5 9. runaway (feat. earth, wind & fire, the product g&b)-amazing song with the disco kings earth, wind & fire 5/5 10. red light district-ok skit 11. perfect gentleman (feat. hope)-a pretty good song. 4.5/5 12. low income (feat. beast, 718-crew)-not a bad song. good lyrics 4/5 13. whitney houston dub plate-another dub plate, this time w/ whitney. not bad 4/5 14. howver you want it-really good song. great flow 5/5 15. hollyhood to hollywood (feat. small world)-amazing song. great lyrics and rhymes. probably the best song on the album, tied w/ #16. 5/5 16. diallo (feat. youssou n'dour, mb2)-by far the greatest clef song ever. this is my most favorite song on the album. it has amazing lyrics. i like the part at the end when youssou n'dour and mb2 come in. 6/5 17. something about mary-a really amazing song about not doing drugs. 5/5 18. bus search-a skit about, well, a bus search 19. wish you were here-an ok remake of a pink flloyd song 4/5 these are the top 5 best songs on the eclefic: 5. pullin' me in 4. runaway (feat. earth, wind & fire, the product g&b) 3. da cypha (feat. supreme c, mary antoinette, hope) 2. hollyhood to hollywood (feat. small world) 1. diallo (feat. youssou n'dour, mb2) overall, i think that this is a really amazing album. at times it can be fun, and at other times it is serious. wyclef jean has amazing lyrics and great rhyming abilities. i really like how he is one of the only rap artists who doesn't swear in any of his songs. i like that alot.
Free Music Review: Socially Conscious Rap Hit: 4 StarsIn this world of rappers that glorify evil, Wyclef is a shining light. Sure, he ain't a goodie-goodie, but he keeps the theme of this album on life and the horrors of the world we live in (Diallo is a good example).Unlike most rappers who seem to use their status to promote drug-running, rape, murder, cars and treating women like [garbage], Wyclef adds some integrity and artistic ability to the genre (not many rappers can sing and play guitar on top of that). This album is a must-have in any Hip Hop collection.
Free Music Review: more like 3 1/2 stars... Hit: 3 StarsI'd hate to write a bad review for Clef, I have much respect for this man. I was disappointed with his latest effort. Maybe "The Carnival" made my expectations a little high. Wyclef's first solo ablum was an excellect & creative blend of hip-hop, r&b, & island; a great showcase of Clef's lyrical, as well as musical, talent. His latest is not as strong, though definitley not bad. I can't enjoy this CD like I enjoy "The Carnival"...It seems Clef is getting a little too pop-like lately. But don't get me wrong, this CD is still worth the buy if you like Wyclef. He is still working to move hip-hop, & music in general, forward out of the rut it has been in lately. A truly creative, talented, eclectic, intellegent artist worthy of your attention. "Diallo" is one of my favorite tracks. Clef did an exceptional job on this one...touching lyrics that tell of the murder of a young man by the police. He goes back to his roots for this one. "911", "Thug Angels", "Perfect Gentleman", & "Runaway" are other honorable mentions. My advice is, if you enjoy hip-hop (real hip-hop), r&b, island, & even some pop influence, or if you love Clef, get this album.
