Free Music Notes for To the East, BlackwardsFree Music Review: The Best Politically Conscious Rap Record ever made!!! Hit: 5 StarsI have bought this record in 1990. I listen to it whenever I think of political things. X-Clan took Black Consciousness deeper than Public Enemy. Professor X carried on the activism of his late father Sonny Carson. Brother J rapped about things that most rappers are scared to touch. If you want to find out what rap was like before the Bling-Bling, Thug, Gangsta, and Booty Video era, buy this record!!!!
Free Music Review: BROTHER J gets deeper than CHUCK D,almost Hit: 4 StarsThe only thing that needs to stop on this album is PROFESSOR X. 'This is protected by the Red,the Black and the Green, with a key, sissies' in almost every song gets very tiring, quick. Nevermind that, check of the son of CHUCK D,BROTHER J throws mad dialogue on every track over funk and R&B samples (obvious samples). My favorites are "Funkin' Lesson",Heed The Word Of The Brother","Raise The Flag" and of course "Verbal Milk",'this is a lot deeper than your white boy diss or your fat gold chain'. Go 'head J,school 'em.
Free Music Review: An Unseen Classic - Never seen again.. Hit: 5 StarsBy Far this is one of the greatest Hip Hop albums ever made. This album changed my life forever ("what's my mind state if my mind isn't black, but Moses, Malcolm and Huey are back". This album taught me things that no history book had taught me at the time. It made me want to read about the names and the events that were being spoken about. Brother J is one of the MC's that never received credit as a great MC, but this Brother never needed any platinum to rock the verb stick. This is not just an album to listen to, but to study.. Vanglorious!! Please buy this album!! Sissy!! 1 Love!
Free Music Review: Isis - Soulrebel Hit: 5 StarsIt doesn't feels necessary to wright about how good this album is after the other postings. I just wan't to inform you about an other X-Clan album except the two in their own name. The same year they released "To the east.." they also released an album with the female mc Isis. It has the same vibe with ultrafunky beats and samples and clear, tight political rhymes. ISIS - Soulrebel (4th and Broadway,1990)
Free Music Review: Pan African Classic. Period. Hit: 5 StarsThis LP has aged quite nicely. Twelve years down the road and it remains unmatched. The most compelling quality of X-Clan is the fact that the music was at least as good as Dr. Dre's tracks and the lyrics were at least as intriguing as Rakim. So, within X-Clan you had what was the ultimate mix of funk + philosophical flow = Funkin' Lesson. The epitome of Pan African hip hop. I remember the first time I saw their album in late 1990. It was just out and I'd never heard of them. Based upon the LP cover (photos of Malcolm, Fannie Lou Hamer, etc.) and the song titles I had to have it. What blasted through my speakers was unlike any other music I'd ever encountered. It was like they uncapped my brain and unleashed my very own thoughts in musical form. Fascinating. Thrilling. Compelling. Fantatsic-in the truest sense of the word. They were Black men obeying their musical-spiritual-emotional-mental call. Props Due! I was so moved that I forced all my friends to listen. And in a couple of cases I bought it for them so they'd have the complete package. I've still got my original vinyl copy from 1990! As well as nearly all their other LPs and 12" singles. I love X-Clan like they are my own brothers. RIP Sugar Shaft. I'm hoping for more from this camp some day. On a side note, Professor X (Lumumba Carson) is the son of Activist Sonny Carson who was the subject of an obscure 70's film called The Education Of Sonny Carson. Check for it.
