Free Music Notes for Drums and Wires AlbumFree Music Review: The first in a three-album streak of master works by XTC Hit: 4 StarsWanting to get into XTC? Okay, I got a couple questions for you. First, do you like new wave/post punk music? Or is pure eighties pop confection more your taste? Second, do you like cerebral lyrics? Or are silly puns and tongue-in-cheek lyrics more your bag? Well... depending on your answer to these questions, Drums and Wires may be the place to start for you. Early XTC finds the band trying to shug off the post punk convention. On this album, their third proper full-length, the band makes a serious stride toward more pop-oriented songcraft. Strangely enough, the more poppy their songs get, the more complex and intricate the arrangements and subtleties. Their first album without keyboardist Barry Andrews, XTC adds guitarist Dave Gregory... who adds counter-melodies and weaving riffs to Andy Partridge's chiming guitar parts. Thus the album's namesake... because all the sounds here are drums and wires (guitar and bass strings). The result is an immediately striking album that gets even better once you take the time to digest all the intricate "wires." If you don't already have Black Sea, then I would certainly go with that as a first purchase of early XTC. Drums and Wires began to see XTC unfold as great songwriters, however I feel that they reached a real pinnacle with the next album, Black Sea. Many others feel that English Settlement, which follows Black Sea is their masterpiece. I almost agree.
