Free Music Notes for Xanadu on Broadway (Original Broadway Cast Recording 2007)

Free Music Review: Just Meant to be Fun!
Hit: 4 Stars

Expectations for the Broadway musical "Xanadu" were not especially high. Based on the wretched, cult-favorite 1980 motion picture, starring Olivia Newton-John, the show instead pokes fun at the motion while maintaining its terrific soundtrack of songs, composed by Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra) and John Farrar. In fact, a couple of other well-known songs by these composers ("Evil Woman", "Strange Magic" and "Have You Never Been Mellow") were added to the production. The show became a hit with the critics.

Taken in this less-serious context, the show's score sounds fun (and it is), though there are a couple of duds in the score (and its a bit short overall). The cast, however, led by Kerry Butler, Cheyenne Jackson, Mary Testa & Jackie Hoffman, sound great throughout!

Best tracks include:

I'm Alive
Magic
Evil Woman (a hysterical interpretation by Testa/Hoffman)
Suddenly
All Over The World
Xanadu

Free Music Review: So much fun....I almost peed.
Hit: 4 Stars

Yah, I have no idea why you would review a musical's album without seeing the show...that's like rating a movie by it's radio commericial. Anyway, I love this movie b/c it's is so cheese-tastic and the music is a true guilty pleasure. The musical was one of the most fun I have had on Broadway! It is truely an interactive experience. The reason why this show survived is b/c of the way it makes fun of the original movie, the 80s, and musical theater in such a clever, fun, playful, and warm way, like how you would tease your little sister or something. So if you keep that in mind, you will like this cast album. Cheyenne Jackson and Ms. Butler are talented singers and great comedic timing. This show is not trying to break musical theater ground her...it's just trying to be fun and it succeeds. I hearted it.

Free Music Review: Xanadu, Xanadu, Now that we're here in Xanadu
Hit: 4 Stars

A place where nobody dared to go
The love that we came to know
They call it Xanadu

What a blast for the past is this Broadway musical based on the disaster of a movie. Olivia Newton John stumbled after the mega hit "Grease" by ending up in a few film fiascos. She made a strong comeback in Del Shore's black comedy about white trash, "Sordid Lives" as country singer Bitsy Mae Harling. She will soon be seen in the TV series of "Sordid Lives" on the Logo Channel this spring.

Once I heard the CD I knew I wanted to see the show. I have my ticket now to see then show when I am in New York. The fun disco songs are there will great tongue in cheek touches which was certainly the way to go in making a stage musical. The show sounds like a blast.

Free Music Review: It certainly du!
Hit: 4 Stars

If you ever saw the original Xanadu film, consider yourself blessed, not cursed. For now, you have the background to fully understand and appreciate this wonderful homage/parody that was adapted/written by Douglas Carter Beane. In the new Broadway production, Cheyenne and Kerry bring an under-recognized score to life!! Farrar and ELO wrote some amazing songs. It is only ashamed that the other creative forces (not you, Olivia) involved in this film screwed up. There's really no other way to put it but: Cheyenne rocks!! Kerry rules!!

Free Music Review: When you can't live there...
Hit: 4 Stars

Although it's not as electric a thrill as the full live experience, listening to this recording brought me right back to the night I saw the show on Broadway, the fun, the laughs, the complete silliness of this show! If you haven't seen it, I don't know if this will help you "get it," but for those who have, this is great! And the liner notes are a treat, too!
