Free Music Review: Lyrics = Insantity Hit: 5 StarsXzibit has been working steadily to build a reputation as a mainstream rapper. Earlier works show his lyrical ability, but lacked the real raw rap style (because of producers and lack of solid beats) necessary to build true success. However, with the likes of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and the other LA rappers, X has finally struck oil with Restless. His amazing ability to mesh solid beats with lyrical assaults display his progess through to the mainstream of west coast rap. Songs like Alkoholik and DNA represent the roots of the thugging lifestyle and the LA rap party scene, but the lyrical content in X, Double Time and Best of Things really hit home with his rap style. He raps freely and easily and really showcases his talents in this album. Being produced by Dre, the solid songs are no doubt a product of Dre's uncanny ability to hook up unbelievable lyrics with shocking beats, and guest appearances by Nate Dogg, Eminem, Snoop, Kokane, and DJ Quik (among others) really pumps this album up to a new level. This is a great rap album, and as Xzibit has only been getting better, both album-wise and lyric-wise, we'll have to see what he offers in the future.
Free Music Review: One of my favourite CD's Hit: 5 StarsThis is one of my favourite cd's, which is saying a lot about it. I just read another review on here that said the beats were lacking on this record, but I don't know where they get that from. The Dre produced X is a banger, and so is Front 2 Back. Lyrically, Xzibit ranks right up there with anybody, whether East or West Coast. This album allows Xzibit to stay street like 40 Dayz and 40 Nightz, but allows him to reach more listeners with a couple of radio friendly tracks. This is just a great CD for people who like real hip hop.
Free Music Review: Lyrics are Wicked, Beats are Maybe a Little Bit Evil Hit: 3 StarsI recently entered a rap phase, which was bad because I had almost no rap CDs. So I sought to increase my collection, and among those who entered was Xzibit.Xzibit has the makings of a great rapper. He has talent, and he has Dre, Snoop, and Em backing him. He has a decent fan base and a lot of CDs. But I cant say I was really impressed with this one. The lyrics were good. X is clever with his rhymes, and although I wont say hes better than Snoop and Dre, I will say he has an aggresive style of rap that on the outside is a little more attractive. However, the beats arent that good. There are a few songs that have good beats. There are also, however, many that are boring. He goes for the same formula that The Eminem Show used later on in a few songs--having softer more melodic beats mix with aggresive lyrics and rapping. It just didnt work. I didnt find myself nodding my head as much as I had hoped. Excluding the beats, the songs are quite good. He got Em, Dre, and Snoop in his songs. He has a ... song that reminds me a Jay-Zs "Big Pimpin'" some ... songs, and one apologizing to his loved ones for being away all the time... The songs are short, without long intros and outros many rappers have. Just brief and to the point. There are very few skits, which in my book is a good thing. Hes a lyrical demon, but needs better beats backing him. Its an OK effort, but Im not sure I would recommend spending your hard-earned money on it when you have people like Busta Rhymes out there making records. Closing comments:I should look into his newest album, Man vs. Machine. Ive heard good things about it. Since Xzibit has such well-known friends in the game, how come he doesnt sell more records?
Free Music Review: Bouncing, fun and often hilarious. Hit: 4 StarsXzibit may just be the greatest rap talent to come from the West Coast for years. Lyrically, Xzibit is arguably the best from the West today. Along with Dr. Dre's production on Restless, a great gangsta rap album is made. In fact, despite the numerous guest appearances from mega-stars on the album, there's very little to outshine Xzibit's own material, except for the appearance of Eminem on "Don't Approach Me." Other guests include Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst. But Xzibit proves to be of equal flavour, vitality and mic skill as all of his counterparts. What's more, he is certainly unique; while of course Xzibit does not leave out the required gangsta-rap quota of guns, hos and chronic, he has his own rugged and rough style to add to the atmosphere. As boasted on the chorus of "X": "I rearrange the whole game with my rugged sound." In fact, Restless is possibly more universal than most gangsta-rap albums: there is no use of the words "devil", "cracker", "honkey" or any other such terms to make white listeners feel uncomfortable. In fact, his duet with Fred Durst almost shows an attempt to reach out to a white audience the way Public Enemy did in 1991 with their heavy-metal duet with Anthrax. It's a bouncing, fun, and often hilarious rap album. It's his best work so far, and well worth buying; certainly an important chapter in the history of West Coast gangsta rap.
