Free Music Review: Adult alternative music at its best
Hit: 5 Stars

As most know who have followed Yanni over the years will recall, his early works were keyboards only recorded in his home studio (except for drums performed by Charlie Adams). He created some wonderful music with those keyboards. Gradually Yanni began adding other instruments besides keyboards and eventually progressed to a full orchestra. As with all great composers it is only natural that they compose for voice or their works have lyrics added by others and "Voices" is the perfect evolutional process

With "Voices" Yanni is sure to lose some old fans wanting to hear the instrumental Yanni they admire, but; at the same time he will win a large number of new fans who prefer lyrics to instrumentals. Beethoven said "Music is the mediator between the spiritual and sensual life" and I believe music is The Voice! All music comes from the creator's inner voice which means it must be sung on some level. The voice is the oldest and most versatile and passionate musical instrument known to man.

"Ethnicity" gave us a preview of what can happen when a Yanni song is set to lyrics. "The Promise" from "Ethnicity" was originally the song "Secret Vows" from the "Out of Silence "CD. Both the instrumental and vocal versions are great but personally I feel the lyric version is more passionate and the vocal really brings out the gospel flavor of the melody.

There are two versions of "Voices", the English version and "Voces" the Latin version. "Voces" features famous Latin vocalist and they lyrics are all in Spanish and Italian. "Voices" is mostly English with a little less than half of the selections in Spanish and Italian. This makes "Voices/Voces" an immediate international sensation on the level of Josh Groban and phenomenal producer David Foster. I purchased both versions because they are very different products. Yanni being the romantic that he is it is no surprise that Spanish and Italian are used in the lyrics and those are two extremely romantic languages.

You can preview some full length songs and see videos at Yanni's official website. Watching the videos gave me goose bumps because the singers are so powerful and passionate sparing nothing in their performance. Of the songs that you can preview I can tell that there are going to be many tracks that my wife and I will be dancing to at our Saturday night ballroom dance parties. "Kill me with Your Love" is a great danceable bolero that that will be a sure file hit. I hate to compare Yanni to Delirium but with a little electronic ambience this track would fit right into that sound.

Yanni's earlier compositions and were probably not written with the goal of being specifically Latin rhythmically they do work quite well. "Desire" has a samba flavor. "The Keeper" is a nice slow rumba again with that Delirium feel. "Vivire Por Ti" also a nice rumba. "Nican" sounds like something from "Ethnicity" with the childrens choir and chanting; this is a great track that conjures up some ancient spirit. "Unico Amore/Enchantment" is a Yanni classic set to Italian lyrics translated to "only love." "Nei Tuoi Occhi/In the Mirror" (in Italian meaning "in your eyes") is an awesome duet with Chloe and Nathan Pacheco. "Amare di Nuovo/Adagio in C Minor" in Italian means "to love of new."

There are some new songs on "Voices" that help the collection out by giving your ears a break for the reinterpreted songs and your mind trying to decide which you like better, the original or the lyric version. "Voices" is adult alternative music at its best and if you keep an open mind, you are going to love it.

Sunrise.

"Voices" is Yanni's first studio release in six years. After establishing himself as one of the most charismatic and popular instrumental entertainers in the world, Yanni now presents us with his music with vocals by four young, very exciting singers. This project was a collaboration with Yanni and Grammy- and Academy Award-winning producer, Ric Wake, who discovered the singers and then mentored them over a period of two years. The singers were encouraged to write lyrics for their favorite Yanni pieces, making them their own. Eight of the seventeen tracks are Yanni classics reinvented as vocal pieces; the others are new, including three instrumentals. Nathan Pacheco and Ender Thomas both have powerful operatic voices and their songs are sung in Spanish and Italian. Chloe and Leslie Mills are more pop-oriented and most of their lyrics are in English. One gets the feeling that all four can sing any style of music well, but they seem to be especially well-suited to Yanni's music. Yanni has always pulled out all the emotional stops with his music, and he has met his match in these singers whose passion rivals his own, sending the music soaring.

"Voices" begins with Nathan Pacheco's incredible " Omaggio (Tribute)," originally from Yanni's 1997 album of the same name. Nathan's passionate tenor brings a tear to the eye and a shiver up the spine. What an amazing voice this guy has! Next up is the sultry voice of Leslie Mills, who has four consecutive tracks. "The Keeper" is a very catchy pop ballad. "Our Days" has a strong Middle Eastern flavor and lyrics, but Mills also uses her voice as an exotic instrument. I especially like "Before The Night Ends." The melody is familiar, but isn't credited as being an older song. "1001" is a new instrumental piece that carries all of Yanni's traditional trademarks - a big sound, international influences, and passion. "Mas Alla" introduces Venezuelan-born Ender Thomas who sings his heart out without going over the top. "Unico Amore (Enchantment)" and "Vivi Il Tuo Sogno (Almost a Whisper)" are Yanni classics with lyrics written and sung by Nathan Pacheco - heart-melting! Chloe, at the age of 20, is the youngest of the singers, but what a voice! She has the vocal power and range of Christina Aguilera without the hard edge. Her singing style is strong yet vulnerable, making her capable of singing virtually anything. Her duet of "Mi Todo Eres Tu (Until the Last Moment" with Ender Thomas is show-stopping, and features them both singing in Spanish. There's a big "wow" factor here! "Ritual de Amor (Desire)" is another highlight. Although Ender didn't write the lyrics, he has taken one of Yanni's most distinctive pieces and made it his own - intoxicating! "Moments Without Time" is a new instrumental that is more on the quiet side - piano, gentle percussion, and background voices. "Ne Tuoi Occhi (In The Mirror)" teams Chloe and Nathan who make musical magic. The closing track is Nathan singing "Amare di Nuovo (Adagio In C Minor), " a stirring and inspiring ending to a most impressive album.

"Voices" includes a DVD that introduces the singers and presents samples of most of the CD's tracks plus a couple more that will be performed in concert - it's quite a package and very highly recommended!

Free Music Review: Amazing Music
Hit: 5 Stars

I have another one from the people at the One2One Network. They sent me the new Yanni Voices [CD/DVD] to review. I should add that it comes with both a CD and a DVD - I'm just reviewing the CD.

EQUATION: Yanni - a memorable name in instrumentals and composition is known for his sweeping music. This time around, he threw a curveball... He has brought vocals to the forefront. The CD takes some of his classic stuff as well as new music - but introduces four vocalists: Nathan Pacheco, Chloe, Ender Thomas, and Leslie Mills. All of them were discovered and mentored by Yanni. The album was released on March 24th. The Yanni Voices world tour kicks off in the U.S. on April 10th.

PLUS: There's music and then there's music. Due to my background, I'll admit, I'm biased to this kind of orchestral music. I just am - can't get around that. The composition is gorgeous, the instrumentals amazingly executed, and the vocalists are so talented I'm surprised we've not heard of them until now. There's a little of everything tempo wise, so it's not the same feel throughout. Each piece feels as though it's a complete story - so when you move on to the next, it really feels like a new story. As for the individual tracks - while all of it is great: Track 1, Omaggio (Tribute), made me cry. Tracks 3 & 4, Our Days and Never Leave the Sun, both made me want to dance for my husband. Track 5, Before the Night Ends, is just plain beautiful.

MINUS: I'm not sure if it's a plus or minus, but my husband listened to it with me, and his response was, "You can't tell it's Yanni." The other minus I would say is - really - you've got to love it. I don't think it's a "so-so" kind of thing. I think you'll either love it or hate it, it feels like that kind of extreme to me.

EQUALS: A positive review. A rave, actually. I simply love this CD.

Free Music Review: Unique, interesting, and diverse
Hit: 5 Stars

As Yanni says "Never mind what Yanni used to do". This album is definitely a new direction for Yanni, and is certainly a real hit. What I really like about the album is its diversity and Yanni's touch on each song..I can find songs of rocky style, pop, new age, classical or even opera style. And I am entertained by 4 different unforgettable voices, not 1. Yanni's piano and his musical background is clear on almost every song which gives the album a unique musical style and character. It is very rich in terms of sounds, voices, languages, melodies, rhythms and instruments, and believe it or not, there's no song that I actually skip on playback..the whole album is so playable.
For his die-hard fans, I would say this move by Yanni should have been expected. Vocals role in Yanni's music has been increasing in every album since The Acropolis in 1993 where he used vocals for 1 song (Aria). The number has been gradually increasing throughout his following albums, until he ended up using vocals for 9 songs in his 2003 Ethnicity album.
For Yanni fans who know his earlier works, it would be very interesting to know how people like Yanni and Ric Wake can fit lyrics into instrumental pieces, such as Tribute, Until The Last Moment, and In The Mirror, and end up with outstanding results..it is not easy..it requires clear knowledge and sense of virtually every aspect in music..2 years of working by 2 of the most talented men in the music industry says it all about this album.
I believe this album is one of the best purchases I have made in a long time..it's made by people I trust, it's unique, it's interesting, and it's diverse..that's what I call a beautiful album..offering value for money.

Free Music Review: Yanni Voices Rocks!
Hit: 5 Stars

As a classically trained professional musician, I can be a bit picky about what music I listen to. I have never really followed Yanni's music. I have enjoyed some of music, but would never have gone out and bought one of his CDs...until Yanni Voices!

Every song in the album kept me interested and wanting more. The four vocalists (Nathan Pacheco, Leslie Mills, Chloe, and Ender Thomas) are all fantastic musicians with a beautiful tone quality and amazing vocal control. My only complaint is that I wish all the artists were featured equally in the album (i.e. Nathan Pacheco performs 6 songs while Ender Thomas only performs 2).

One of my favorite aspects of the album was its diversity. It was a wonderful combination of classical with a sprinkle of pop music. The songs ranged from calming to upbeat. Most of the songs are in English, though a few were in Italian and Spanish (including my favorite in both Italian and English, "Nei Tuoi Occhi--In the Mirror"). Along with languages, songs in the album had a very international flavor and Yanni uses different musical influences from several countries including India, Asia, and Latin countries.

I would highly recommend this album and look forward to more vocal music from Yanni and all four of these musicians.
