Free Music Review: Yes - Best Album Of The Trevor Rabin Era

After the enormous success of the band's previous album "90125" Yes had suddenly become a commercially viable entity. The band toured "90125" for two years and then took another two to put out its follow-up. The pressure was on to come up with another hit album, and although "Big Generator" did not do nearly as well at the cash registers as the previous one did, I actually think it is better. This album seems to be rated lower in general by Yes fans than "90125", but I think just about every track here is solid, and like "90125" the album mixes more straight ahead rock / pop material with the band's more traditional progressive rock sound. I like both of the singles "Rhythm Of Love" and "Love Will Find The Way", but the real meat of the album are the sweeping "Shoot High Aim Low" with it's cool duel lead vocals from Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin", "Final Eyes", the most prog oriented track, "I'm Running" and the majestic finale "Holy Lamb". "Almost Like Love" is another cool little song that rocks about as hard as Yes ever gets. My least favorite is the title track and even that has some cool instrumental moments. Overall I think that "Big Generator" is the best album of the Trevor Rabin era and is an album that seems to get unfairly dissed by Yes fans.
