Free Music Review: close to the edge of perfection
Hit: 5 Stars

Great rock albums have been with us for about 40 years now. Porcupine Tree's The Incident is an amazing rock album of today, and even though it is quite contemporary it does require some listening to appreciate its power. Close to The Edge is one of the best rock albums of the early 1970s, rock's golden era. If you just start listening to this music in 2009 without prior exposure to Yes, or even if you used to listen to their albums a lot, many years ago, this music may appear aged to you. Lock yourself in a room and play this fairly loud on repeat for a few hours or take it with you next time you will be traveling all day and play it over and over on your i-pod. You will reach the...greatness of this music. This is the best album by one of the greatest rock bands of all times. Close To The Edge could have defined the term Symphonic Rock. This music was composed by their strongest lineup ever. Two creators of Yes, vocalist Jon Anderson and bassist Chris Squire had Bill Bruford playing drums, Steve Howe on guitar and Rick Wakeman in charge of the keyboard department. Rick Wakeman, although only with them for a year or so has become back in 1972 possibly the biggest celebrity among the Symphonic Rock bands. Rick Wakeman appeared on stage like a tall angel dropped straight from heavens with dozen of keyboards, synthetizers, mellotrons, pianos and anything else he came up with. His hair was very long, straight and blond and his figure covered in long shiny coats looked majestic. Steve Howe already considered one of the best guitarists back then has reinforced his position with this release. Bill Bruford, one of the most talented drummers around left Yes shortly after the completion of Close To The Edge to join Robert Fripp in his new King Crimson's lineup. One of the main reasons Jon Anderson and Chris Squire wanted to start Yes was to increase the quality of rock music's vocal by harmonizing their voices and sing parts of their songs with their common voice. We have great examples of their harmony here.
Close To The Edge consists of 3 compositions, 19 minute long title song, 10 minute long And You And I and 9 minute long Siberian Khatru. The middle song is the most easily accessible at first and its beauty is permanent but the title song is perhaps the most ambitious and beautiful piece of music ever created by Yes (Heart Of The Sunrise can compete with it in my opinion). The structure of Close To The Edge is as complex and abstract as its lyrics which are truly metaphoric and enigmatic. You can listen to this song a hundred times and every time its meaning varies and progresses. Siberian Khatru although my least favorite song on the album is another extremely solid piece of music where all members get to showcase their instrumental prowess. My favorite Yes albums besides Close To The Edge are: Fragile, Relayer, The Yes Album and Yessongs, and some of my favorite songs are Roundabout, Heart Of The Sunrise, Close To The Edge, Changes, Machine Messiah, And You And I, Yours Is No Disgrace, Don't Kill The Whale, Mood For A Day, Hold On, Future Times, Soon, Onward, Yesterday And Today, Turn Of The Century, The Ancient Giants, It Can Happen, Survival, Long Distance Runaround.

Yes was dealing with so many changes of their personnel in the middle of 1970s and although they were famous by the strength the musicians joining their ranks, who would have predicted that Yes was going to have the strongest and longest career of all.

Close to the Edge (Shm) Poster

Yes, the definitive force in classic and prog-rock music released this masterwork in 1972. Way ahead of its time in message, packaging, sound and musicianship, Friday Music couldn't think of a nicer way to start off the new year, than with this major release from the massive Yes catalog, one of many to be released in the new Yes 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series on Friday Music.

Close To The Edge includes the 18+ minute title track, And You And I and Siberian Khatru, which of course feature the masterful talents of Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman Steve Howe, and Bill Bruford. This sonic achievement has been considered the definitive progressive rock album of all time, and Friday Music is very excited to be the new home of this much treasured masterpiece.

As with all of our audiophile vinyl, we painstakingly have worked with the Atlantic Records source tapes to deliver what we feel is the definitive audiophile version of this fine album. Mastered by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and at Capitol Studios. .

As with all Friday Music audiophile vinyl, you will get the original graphics, including the original gatefold cover, plus the very rare green lyric album inner sleeve, and a protective vinyl album sleeve to protect your investment for many years.
What's it all about? "A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace / And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace." Actually, it really doesn't matter. Later they would fragment and lose focus, but here is Yes functioning for once in the band's tortuous career as an organic unit, and individual elements--such as Jon Anderson's trippy lyrics--are less important than the whole. Even Rick Wakeman's Rachmaninoff-for-Hammond-organ excesses work in context, compensated for by Steve Howe's amazingly fluid guitar (equal parts Charlie Christian and Chet Atkins), in turn counterbalanced by Chris Squire's behemoth Rickenbacker bass and Bill Bruford's jazzy drumming. This is rock music informed by the improvisational spirit of jazz and allied with the grandiosity of the classics. Love it or hate it, Close to the Edge is the definitive prog album. --Mark Walker
