Free Music Review: Yes - Probably The Band's Weakest Album

After the "Keys" discs keyboardist Rick Wakeman jumped ship for the 3rd time and was technically not replaced. Some of the keys on "Open Your Eyes" were played by Russian keys man Igor Khoroshev who is not credited as a band member on this disc, but would officially join for the next one. He plays on 3 tracks here. The biggest personnel change for this album was the addition of guitarist / vocalist / keyboardist Billy Sherwood. Sherwood had been associated with Yes as far back as the Union album in 1991. He had served as musician, songwriter, and producer for the band at various times over the past decade, although never an official member until now. He even toured with the band as an extra musician on the "Talk" tour in 1994. Sherwood was often compared to Trevor Rabin in his writing and singing style. He is also a decent guitarist, but not in either Rabin or Steve Howe's league. So with yet more personnel changes the band set out once again to record a new album. Unfortunately open your eyes really has never struck a chord with me and to my ears is the band's weakest overall album. I don't know what it is, I have tried and tried to like this and it just never seems to gel with me. To me it sounds like a deliberate attempt to go back to the glory days of "90125" and get the band back on the radio. All of the songs are short, although unlike the Trevor Rabin era that it seems to be emulating, the songs are not very memorable for the most part. The first two songs, including the title track, which was the single from the album, are decent enough and I also like "Universal Garden" and "From The Balcony" ok, but I would not consider any of these songs great Yes works. The rest of the album is all rather blah to my ears, not horrible, but nothing that really sticks with me either. I don't think Yes has ever made what I would consider a bad album, but "Open Your Eyes" is my all time least favorite Yes release.

After some extremely confusing personnel shakeups, the 1997 Yes configuration--including classic members Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, and Alan White, plus new keyboardist Billy Sherwood--emerged with this surprisingly strong effort that manages to maintain Yes's familiar prog-rock sound without making the band sound like a museum piece.
