Free Music Notes for Relayer

Free Music Review: Stunningly Remastered
Hit: 5 Stars

There's little point in discussing the music of Relayer and it's importance in prog rock as others have done so at length elsewhere. What's great about this particular release is the beathtaking sound quality and bonus tracks provided by Rhino Records. A vast improvement over the original CD remaster, this is Yes sounding better than ever. Each instrument stands out in the mix, the highs are more crisp and the lows deeper. A great deal of the original tape hiss has also been removed. I heard nuances and layers of sound on this release that I'd never heard before; it was like listening to the album for the first time again.

As for the bonus tracks, the single edits of "Soon" and "Sound Chaser" are somewhat superfluous, but the alternate version of Gates of Delerium is quite interesting. I won't give too much away, but I will say it's fascinating how much it varies from the album version.

With crystal clear sound and almost 30 minutes of bonus material all at a budget price, this re-issue of one of Yes' classic albums is a great value for any fan of progressive rock music.

Free Music Review: Howe it's done
Hit: 5 Stars

Make no mistake, this is Steve Howe's showcase. From the liner notes you learn that the entire album was pretty much mapped out before Moraz even plugged in. With that in mind Patrick does an outstanding job. The age of "fusion" was well under way when they made this and the influence from groups like Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra are evident. "Gates" is noisy and violent at times but remember that it is a recreation of a battlefield in all its terror. "Sound Chaser" is an adventure in tempo changes and surprises and works well. "To be Over" is magnificent with its counterpoint melodies that Yes was known for. It is one of their finer moments. The extra tracks are interesting. "Soon" works as a single but whoever thought "Chaser" could be fashioned into top 40 material was nuts. The studio run-thru for "Gates" is for fans only. It's like watching a behind-the-scenes feature for a movie in that the raw creative process is exposed in its naked form. Sound-wise I can only compare it to my bad pressing on vinyl that I suffered with for 30 years. It is music to my ears.

Free Music Review: Form through Rhythm, Electric Freedom
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of Yes for about 30 of my 39 years, and Relayer (along with Tales, CTTE, Yessongs, and GFTO) has always been my favorite. Especially the "shorter" cuts (!) "Sound Chaser" and "To Be Over". There's not much I could say to add to what's below, except that these new remastered Rhino releases are first rate in every way (brilliant sound, cool packaging, interesting bonus tracks, and very affordable price). If you're a big Yesfan, and can't quite decide, then "don't delay, buy today!" If you're a tentative Yesfan who hasn't quite worked up the courage to build a collection, then you now simply have no excuse, and there's never been a better time!

The studio run-through tracks are very interesting. Most of them don't really stand on their own as listening experiences, but they give a very enlightening picture of how this incredible music evolved, and the high degree of refinement employed prior to final release.

The fun I've had with these new releases is well worth the money.

Free Music Review: One of My Favorites
Hit: 5 Stars

Yes, along with bands such as Pink Floyd, ELP, and ELO, is one of my favorite bands. Their vivid imagery, musical intricacy, and visionary progressive style place Yes among the few truly great bands of the century. Relayer is one of the best albums by one of the greatest bands of all time.

1. The Gates of Delirium remains tied for my favorite song ever. Despite its length, the song keeps you interested throughout. It is as musically complex as a classical symphony, but much more creative and powerful. The song begins smoothly, but quickly turns into an incredible organized chaos. It transitions from this aggressive section into the beautifully flowing "Soon" section.

2. Sound Chaser is a wonderful show of the musicianship in the band. It manages to contain atonal music, impossibly fast soloing, and progressive rock into a single song.

3. To Be Over ends the album nicely with a relaxing song that is somewhat similar to "Soon" in its flowing structure.

My rating 10/10

Free Music Review: Classic Music, Classic Prog, From A Classic Band!
Hit: 5 Stars

"Relayer" originally had 3 songs, but the Rhino reissues added extra stuff. That is cool, but the original stuff is SWEET!!! "The Gates of Delirium"...how do I even start talking about it?!?!?!?! It just combines so many different styles, sounds and techniques, I don't see why it's not a well-known classic! (Also, if you pay attention/read along with the lyrics, it is rather comical what the lyrics are talking about and the manner in which they are sung :-)...) Next, there is Sound Chaser. I..have...never heard...such guitar work in my life!!! Steve Howe is just pulling off some inhuman stuff here! And for the bass guitar, Chris Squire is pulling next to or passing some of the stuff done by Geddy Lee! <--Rush. The guitar is just speed, speed and then followed by the IMMORTAL guitar solo and more 1600th notes and so on. It is truly an amazing song! Awaken is pretty cool. It's a tad on the softer side, but nonetheless a classic! I highly recommend this to any fan of Prog-Rock. Nonetheless, Yes!
