As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
There are those that have a goal to be negative. Every waking moment they seek the dark clouds and embrace. If a record reviewer chooses that path, they need to at least make their arguments worthwhile.
Numerous critics panned this release for not being adventurous enough. Think of the logic of that comment. Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, and Steve Howe embrace the services of an orchestra and dare to recreate their magnificent works in a new design.
In fact could you get more adventurous then to have Bill Bruford who specializes in non-commercial material appear on a remake of "Owner Of A Lonely Heart?"
The newfound partnership between the orchestra with the engineering wizardry of Alan Parsons is successful pure and simple.
The varied pieces selected make for a great and unpredictable musical journey for us. From the beauty of "Wonderous Stories" to the timeless "I've Seen All Good People" the effort is consistent with the only fault not being a double disc!
If listening to Steve Howe perform magic isn't a pleasure and a given, please find the next dark cloud. For the rest of us this will make it a great mood for a day.
