Free Music Review: This holiday smorgasbord will satisfy all your tastes

This is one of those special Christmas presents that will stay near the top of your play rack well after the holidays; if you're like me, you'll find that it gets better with each listening, as previously unheard nuances reveal themselves to your ears. In fact, my first listen in the car left me with a case of those famous mixed feelings - engaged by some tracks and unsure about others. A second listening had me enamored with most of the tracks. But what really untied the ribbons for me was getting it home and listening to the entire CD through a quality headset that reproduced the full range and blend of sounds. I'm listening to it yet again through a set of cans as I write this and the music moves me. As for complaints some writers make about the curious blend of material, I'm an old Swede and have a warm spot in my heart for a good holiday smorgasbord! As for it not really being a Christmas album, that was not its entire intent. First, the title says, "Songs of Joy and Peace." And Ma writes in the liner notes not only about Christmas but also about his appreciation of an annual celebration of the "winter solstice" and its music "drawn from the world's cultures." Hence, "Kuai Le" from China appears. Still, most of the cross-cultural selection is Christmas connected and the musical dialects are rich and diverse. Even some of the selections that don't immediately seem to fit, do on further listening. As another writer already observed, for example, in James Taylor's sly interpretation of "Here Comes the Sun" (Son) - "Here he comes..." There are so many fine cuts on this CD - you can discover your own favorites. But one last line in passing. It's heartwarming to hear that, at age 88, Dave Brubeck still has some of his old chops. Go buy the album!
