Free Music Notes for Black PearlFree Music Review: Just cause she's a sexy black pearl Hit: 5 StarsI love yo yo's on going quest to lift the spirit and appreciation for the black woman. She's done a lot for black women and I'm sure she's not done..
Free Music Review: "...Cuz I'm A Woman And I Can Do That" (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars) Hit: 4 StarsYo-Yo is probably one of the best female rappers I've heard in a minute comming from the early 90's. After her debut album Make Way for the Motherlode back in '91, her sophomore album Black Pearl proved that this girl has some skills.
Hearing most of her albums, I have to say this one might be her best. She really has a lot to say, especially when she speaks about women, and how they are living in society. Whether if it is living with a bad boyfriend, or living and doing drugs, or dealing with female drama, she covers it all on this album. One great track that I liked was "You Should Have Listened" where she covers all of those topics. On the song "Hoes" she defends the female gender being called that name and features a Deadly Threat. "A Few Good Men" is another excellent track about men who don't sell drugs.
Production here is mostly by Sir Jinx and DJ Pooh (the Lench Mob's bread butter when it came to their production), with a some by DJ Muggs (from Cypress Hill), Down Low Productions, Bobcat, and Rashad. A lot of it has that early 90's sound with isn't bad at all. "So Funky" is a nice funky type beat, that reminds me of something I would hear on Del's I Wish My Brother George Was Here.
Overall, Black Pearl is a real nice album from Yo Yo. I beleve this album got her the nickname "Black Pearl" as well. Her skills on here are excellent here as well as her subject matter. This album really has that early 90's sound to it, back when rap was about sending messages to it's listeners to better their lives, and thats what she does on here. Black Pearl is mostly about uplifting African-American females who are not living the way that they are supposed to, and Yo Yo backs it with some skills. I would be suprised if anyone remembers her albums and still spin them every once in a while. I recommend that you check this album, espeically if you're a fan of early Ice Cube/Lench Mob or if you're a female and are looking for some positive lyrics. This is a toss up with her next album You Better Ask Somebody as being her best album. Peace!!
