Free Music Notes for You Are My SunshineFree Music Review: Parents, keep your street cred and enchant your home Hit: 5 Stars
This might be the best children's album I've ever heard. Mitchell's soothing voice and folky instrumentation (toy pianos, acoustic guitars, sing-alongs) evoke memories of my own childhood, sitting around campfires, wide-eyed and transfixed at the magical stories spun by a guitarist through her music. The songs range from sad to charming to silly (the ABC's in reggae?). The set covers almost all the bases of children's folk music, with some well chosen standards ("Skip To My Lou," including some silly new verses) and covers (Schoolhouse Rock's "3 is the Magic Number" and "Goodnight Irene" by Leadbelly). The standout track is the traditional piece "Froggy Went a Courtin" (which has also been covered by the venerable Bob Dylan, to give you an idea of Mitchell's skill in song selection). It's the irreverent story of Mr. Frog and Miss. Mouse's wedding...but only after her uncle rat gives his blessing! Finally, the added bonus of owning this disc is that since Mitchell is from the indie band Ida, you can still keep your street cred among your hip but non-child-having buddies.
Free Music Review: You can't ask for better Hit: 5 Stars
My Husband bought this CD for me when I was pregnant with our first child. My sister and I sang 'You are My Sunshine' to each other growing up and still do if we need to be cheered up. My husband heard a review of the album on National Public Radio and knew it was the perfect gift for me. He knew I loved folk and acoustic music.
After our son was born playing the album during our evening nursing sessions was a mainstay through the first four months. Now we keep the album in the car. We have a long commute to get grocery's and run errands so it keeps him very happy B-Boppin to 'Take you Ridin in the Car', 'BoDiddly', and 'The Ladybug Picnic'. My sister now sings 'You are my Sunshine' to her nephew and he loves it - I can't wait until he can sing along with her. Your children will love the album and so will you. I worked in early childhood education for several years and it is by far one of the best children's album I have heard.
Free Music Review: Terrific children's music--loving, heart-felt, great voice. No lyrics :( Hit: 5 Stars
Elizabeth Mitchell is a breath of fresh air in children's music. We saw her perform recently at a children's book festival, and she is wonderful. Her voice and her energy and her love of children are fantastic. She is not a children's artist who seeks to exploit a marketing niche. Rather, she follows in the tradition of Guthrie, Seeger, and others who sing for children because they want to, because they consider children to be important beings.
Elizabeth does some wonderful renditions of music from vintage Sesame Street here (Ladybugs 12) as well as a host of favorites like You Are My Sunshine. This CD ought not to disappoint a toddler or a family who likes to feel joy and to feel relaxed about being together.
Wonderful! We can't wait for her family's new album!
The only drawback--no lyrics included. Ah well. Perhaps on the next one...
Free Music Review: Timeless. Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard Elizabeth Mitchell on NPR in October 2006 before I was even pregnant. She was featuring her '..Little Bird' CD. I book marked her because I knew her music would make a nice gift for some friends that were parents. When I had my twins a year later I started my children's collection with her music. Maybe I just resonate with her genre, Woody Guthrie, The Dead, Neil Young, Bob Marley, etc., but to me her music stands out from most childrens music. There are many good voices and educational themes out there. Ms. Mitchell sings with her soul and that transcends easily to listeners. Even a categorically "sad" song like 'goin down the road' comes across as soothing. I see her music as a fundamental balance for a sometimes over stimulating world our children are growing up in.
Free Music Review: Finally! Children's music that I LIKE to listen to! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been looking for music that I can listen to with my baby that appeals to both of us. I actually found out about Elizabeth by listening to toddler radio on pandora. After listening to song after song of annoying, high pitched voices about peanut butter and jelly and wiggling and other made up words, I finally bought this album and am glad I did! It's music we can listen to together, and it puts both of us into a more relaxed, happy mood. Most of the songs on the album I have fond memories from childhood and am happy to pass them on to my little one. I look forward to buying more of her music. My baby is little now, so I can't wait until she starts to sing these songs along with me. Thanks to Amazon, it was really easy to buy this mp3 album
