Free Music Review: Welcome To The South: Young Buck Style!

I always liked Young Buck even though Im not too fond of G-unit. He was the only member out of the crew I felt. His first single Let Me In is okay but let's face it. It wasnt the best choice for a lead single. Shorty Wanna Ride would have been a better first single. Im A Soldier starts off the album on a good foot. Buck raps well over a dope beat with 50 on the hook. Do It Like Me is slammin. Welcome To the South feat David Banner and Lil Flip is a banger and that was the best verse David Banner has given you in a while. Look At Me Now feat Mr Porter is okay. Prices On My Head feat Lloyd Banks and D-Tay and Bonafide Hustler feat Tony Yayo are notable cuts too. After Shorty Wanna Ride, the best three cuts on the album would appear in the form of "Bang Bang", "Thou Shall", and "Black Gloves". I like the original version of Stomp feat T.I and Ludacris better than the remix with Game(whose vere was weak by the way). The last two songs are straight up garbage. Taking Hits feat D-Tay and Walk With Me feat Stat Quo are wack. Bottom Line: Young Buck's Straight Outta Cashville is one of the better G-Unit releases from a rapper who proved to be the most interesting out of his crew. Young Buck flowed well on this album and the production is good. Standouts: DO IT LIKE ME, WELCOME TO THE SOUTH, PRICES ON MY HEAD, BONAFIDE HUSTLER, SHORTY WANNA RIDE, BANG BANG, THOU SHALL, BLACK GLOVES and STOMP.

Young Buck is out to show the rap world that he's no mere 50 Cent lackey. Yet, Buck and 50 share an equally intense love for firearms and hustle-specific wordplay. 50 utters death threats on the hook of "I'm a Soldier"--right after the gun shot sound effects, of course--and the thuggery just accelerates from there. "Do It Like Me" and "Prices on My Head" reveal Buck's Tupacian persecution complex. Burgeoning beat miners Midi Mafia rework a classical music sample to perfection on "Thou Shall," offering a little something to ease the tension. And when the G Unit comes together, the results are usually breathtaking: "Bonafide Hustler" finds 50 Cent dissing Wyclef Jean while Tony Yayo flips keen verses about peddling drugs, to the tune of "Mama's Gonna Buy You a Mockingbird." Crunk beats from Lil' Jon ("Shorty Wanna Ride") and Three 6 Mafia ("Stomp," "Taking Hits") bring Buck's Tennessee roots to the fore, perfectly matching the rapper's country cadence. Although the boasts about his 'hood exploits can get tiresome, Buck delivers some nasty, first-rate storytelling and jeep beats. --Dalton HigginsRap & Hip-Hop Music CDs
