Free Music Notes for Young Frankenstein: The New Mel Brooks MusicalFree Music Review: UNSTOPPABLE COMEDY TRAIN BARRELING STRAIGHT UP YOUR CHOO-CHOO!! Hit: 5 Stars
If you love comedy and you love great musical theater talent, this album will knock your socks off. Megan Mullally is the greatest Broadway singer working today, plus she brings her amazing comedy chops to the stage. The woman is old-school FUNNY! No wonder Mel Brooks grabbed her for the role. Her numbers on this record are like a tsunami of a master class!!! A TSUNAMI !!! Listen to the detail she adds to every phrase!! Roger Bart is like a crazed Robert Preston in The Music Man, carrying it off with charm and manic charisma. "The Brain" is a g.d. laugh riot! Sutton Foster glows as always, Andrea Martin is a mugging genius, Christopher Fitzgerald is like a little hunchback version of TAZ the Tasmanian Devil, whirling about the stage, chewing up scenery with a monster's appetite. Speaking of, Shuler Hensley is SO GREAT as the monster. I was worried the most about his role because Peter Boyle's work in the film was so indelible, but Shuler is a giant, lumbering, understated success. I've seen this show twice and it is relentlessly entertaining. Buy this record, it's a gas, but get yourself to Broadway and see this show! It's SO GREAT!!!

Don't believe what you read in the New York Times, especially those caustic reviews by Ben Brantley. He needs to go! Get Clive Barnes back! "Young Frankenstein" is a wonderful, hilarious romp parodying the musicals of Cole Porter and Friml and Youmans. It takes you back to when musicals were fun and frolicsome. There are great performances from everyone. Only Roger Bart doesn't match the mayhem and I think that is more of a directorial matter. I would love to see someone like Bill Irwin or even Robin Williams takeover the role.
The audience simply adored the show when I saw it. And the CD is well worth the price. If you're in New York take in "YF" and another Brantley reject "A Catered Affair." Take a pass on "In the Heights" which is over-hyped and a Latino rip-off of "Rent" and "West Side Story." I just heard that "In the Heights" has already recalled all future discount tickets even though they were purchased before the show won the Tony.
I guess the inhabitants of the Heights won't get to see their own story now.
Free Music Review: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN? A MONSTER SMASH! Hit: 5 Stars
Mel Brooks' latest work suffered a patch of bad press---due mostly to jealousy at the incredible success of Brooks' previous mega-hit, The Producers, another film-to-Broadway musical---but the cast album is hysterical. The songs emerge organically from the side-splitting film, and harkens back to an earlier time on Broadway, with melodic songs and lyrics with sly and sexy innuendos. Remembering that Brooks' first mainstream musical was in 1952 (he wrote sketches for New Faces of 1952), the rollicking old fashioned music is easy to place. The cast is very easy on the ears; Roger Bart, Megan Mullally, Sutton Foster and Andrea Martin perform honestly, never sending up the material, nor treating it with less than the respect required for wildly funny results. With songs like "Roll in the Hay," "He Vas My Boyfriend" and, or course, the monster's big hit, Irving Berlin's "Puttin' on the Ritz," there's rollicking fun everywhere. Pundits and critics have hated hated hated this show, but the audience seems to love it. But what do audiences know?
Free Music Review: Hilarious! Hit: 5 Stars
I could not wait to get my hands on this CD. As soon as I popped it into my CD player, I experienced instant gratification. Being a huge fan of The Producers, as well as Mel Brooks, I absolutely loved hearing "The New Mel Brooks Musical"; it hasn't lost a bit of its charm. Everybody is perfectly cast. I literally laughed out loud at Roger Bart and Megan Mullally. They nailed both of their charecters perfectly. Even Christopher Fitzgerald (whom I was tad skeptical about filling the role of Eye-gor) did a wonderful job and was hysterical. Naturally, changes had to be made to adapt the well loved classic movie to the stage, but it survives the transition quite well. I was extremely pleased with how this musical turned out, despite its mixed reviews. I hope to see the show whenever I can. I reccomend this album to any fan of Mel Brooks.
Free Music Review: Young Frankenstein Rocks Hit: 5 Stars
The CD of the Young Frankenstein musical is great. It makes you feel you are at the theater watching those glorious performers work their magic. But the real magic-maker is the imaginative creater Mel Brooks. It is just amazing how he writes all the music and songs. He cares about what the original actors felt about reworking the hit movie into a musical. I read Mel even went to Marty Feldman's grave to see if it was alright. I think Megan Mullally as Dr. Frankenstein's fiance really steals the CD, as her songs are so memorable. A lot of people never knew she could sing. Roger Bart, Sutton Foster, Andrea Martin, Christopher Fitzgerald, Fred Applegate and Shuler Hensley are all wonderful. Laugh along with Mel Brooks; he wouldn't have it any other way!
