Free Music Review: Another great (and particular) album by TYG

I've been a huge fan of TYG since their first single, and I feel somewhat vindicated by this album - the songs, when stripped here of studio gadgets, sample gimmickry and the expected bombastic shifts in dynamics, are courageous, effective, even transcendent at times; and TYG are revealed to be great arrangers and musicians. The Suicide cover is a weak point, and the vocals on I'm the Drug are a little pinched... But these acoustic versions of Our House, Everythere and Skinflowers are truly awe-some.

On this album, Franz's voice can be the deal-breaker. I love it. He's one of the greatest frontmen I've ever seen and his voice can split mountains while singing about butterflies. However, my wife finds his voice to be annoying here (as does a previous reviewer, below), even though she loves the music.

So, although I thoroughly enjoy Knock On Wood and would recommend it to any fan of the group, to a novice I would suggest listening to the previews before you buy. TYG are typically a "love or hate" outfit; this album probably has the potential to appeal to more people than "L'eau Rouge" or "Play Kurt Weill", but it's still a very particular flavor.
