Free Music Review: A Song in the Life of Peanuts

I must admit I haven't listened to this CD quite often enough. When I'm in the mood for these songs, I tend to listen to the 1999 Revival Cast since it has some great songs on it that this one doesn't. However, that's a mistake. This one has its own fun charm.
This disc is a 2000 release of a recording from 1967. Frankly, the recording is rather simple. The main instrument is the piano. However, it sounds like there is more thanks to the wide range of percussion used. Heck, I love how they make the opening notes sound like a kid's piano.
The songs are absolutely wonderful. The encouraging anthem "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" always gets me in the mood for what is to come. I love Lucy singing counterpoint to Moonlight Sonata in "Schroeder." The various ways the characters tackle "The Book Report" are hilarious. And I can't leave out Charlie Brown's attempts to fly a "Kite." Being used to the new arrangements, I was surprised by the tempo changes in "T-E-A-M," but I really like the contrast. Try as I might, however, I still can't get into "My Blanket and Me."
What struck me the most, however, are the tracks exclusive to this disc. Granted, I'd be hard pressed to call any of them songs. They are more dialogue with music in the background. But I love them. We get to listen to Snoopy fight off "The Red Baron." "Queen Lucy" isn't happy when Linus points out it is an inherited title. "Peanuts Potpourri" is mainly given over to Snoopy, but it will still make you laugh.
Then there are the bonus tracks. Four of the songs are presented in their original demo with composer Chuck Gesner and Barbara Minkus providing the vocals. Frankly, the only real change is a final joke from Lucy on "Kite."
My only true complaint with this disc is the background noise. There is a noticeable hiss on all the tracks, almost like the noise an old tape machine would make.
Overall, this is a good recording of fun songs. While it won't replace my Revival Cast disc, I do see a need to pull this one out more often.
