Free Music Notes for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1967 Original Off-Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: I waited for this
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the recording I heard in high school when I was in two productions of the show. I looked for this recording in 2001 and only found the newer revival one available. The two versions are quite different from each other. This original one has the charm, simplicity and honesty that is faithful to the Peanuts cartoon strip, while the revival sounds too polished and over-orchestrated to me. I was disappointed when the revival appeared to have replaced this beloved original. Those who heard and enjoyed the revival first may find the original flat and uninteresting, but the "oldie" is the one for me and probably anyone who was introduced to this delightful show before the newer version was released.

Free Music Review: Happiness Is The Show As It Was Written!
Hit: 5 Stars

To those who complain about the "quality" of this recording, or lack there of as the case seems to be, I must remind that this was originally released as a record album. And, as it was a TINY, Off-Broadway show, the fact that it was recorded AT ALL is, in itself, miraculous. Though the recording from the recent Broadway production (Which was NOT a revival as the show had NEVER appeared on Broadway before) keeps a good part of the score in tact, the alterations made by Andrew Lippa are in stark contrast to what was originally written and intended. The appeal of the show was its small size, and the intimate charm its size engendered. This is only to be found on this Original recording---

Free Music Review: Truly Magic
Hit: 5 Stars

Listening to this recording after hearing and falling in love with the revival recording was a real experience. This version is ten times better than the new '99 cast and it really has all the charm and pep of a real show. Though the numbers aren't as tightly knit as the new recording, this one is better and shows off the Peanuts as they were meant to be. The characters are real and heartwarming and Reva Rose's Queen Lucy is great! I highly recommend this CD over the new recording! Though that one is more polished, it lacks the charm and simple innocence of this cast. No wonder it was a smash hit!

Free Music Review: Good CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm an accompianist and am working with a HighSchool Drama Department and their production of "You're a Good man Charlie Brown" This recording is excellent- and I would recommend it without any reservation because it closely follows the original script/orchestration. I do not recommend the 1999 CD version of the same play that was brought back to broadway. Too many "artistic liberties" were taken in it's recording, thus it is not even close to the original production. The simple feeling of the play is lost in the newer recording.

Free Music Review: The little show that lit up Broadway, world, and our hearts.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a tiny show. With only a few orchastrations and the talents of six actors. None of whom could really sing(except Balaban and Burghoff. But this was one of the most popular off-Broadway musicals in history. The songs are funny and charming. "Book Report" "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and of course, "Happiness" are songs that just will make you're day better. Buy this alubm if you are a big Peanuts fan, or a musical fan who can take a big from the huge productions and go to something a little more wimsical and fun.
