Free Music Review: Wonderful
Hit: 5 Stars

There is only one thing better than the music and lyrics on this recording and that's the cast that sings it. I admit, I thought it wouyld be hard to picture Anthony in any other role than Mark, but then again, it's not easy to picture Adam Pascal as anything but Roger and here is as Radames in Aida. But Anthony was perfect. Roger Bart made a fun Snoopy. Illana is a perfectly cast Lucy, took the persona to a new level. Kristin Chenowith is a gem. I love her Sally and My New Philosophy is easily my favorite song. Happiness is a wonderful tune. Full of happiness yes, but it's positive and hopeful and just so uplifting. The story is classic, every love the characters from the comic strips and the essential cartoon holiday videos. B.D. Wong played a perfect Linus and his first lines from The Book Report are Linus on so many levels. He's a brainy little kid, too smart for his own good, but you love him because he's Linus and he's so cute. I can't remember Schroeder's name, but man, can this guy sing. I love how he's featured on Glee Club Rehearsal, how a little kid can take Home On The Range so serious. Then he takes Beethoven day and sings a jazzy little number about a classical composer. This is just fantastic. It is a real treasure of the Amnerican musical theatre. I love and you will too. I give it my highest recommendation.

Free Music Review: Incredible Recording of Great Show
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw the new version of the show a few months back, having virtually no prior experience with it (except maybe years ago when I was little). I thought it was enjoyable, but not great; a bit disjointed (a bunch of random skits). I came across the CD a few weeks later at the Virgin MegaStore listening station, and purchased it. I'd say it is one of the better-executed recordings in my (fairly) extensive cast recording collection. I think the orchestrations are awsome, particularly the new arrangement of "Happiness" at the end. I returned to see the show the first evening performance after the Tony's. The audience went absolutely wild upon Kristen's and Roger's initial entrances. Actually, the audience was pretty wild throughout (the closing had already been announced). Needless to say, I enjoyed the show a thousand times more this time. The cast was extremely friendly and gracious (especially Roger and Kristen) at the stage door afterward. I would have loved to see the final performance but (i) it wasn't at the TKTS booth, and (ii) I hadn't seen the Civil War yet, which was closing the same day. I highly recommend this recording.

Free Music Review: A good man, a great show!
Hit: 5 Stars

I played charlie brown in a junior high production of this musical-- I wish I'd had these great arrangments to sing along to! This revival has been updated and reorchestrated to include a small ensemble orchestra as opposed to the previous recording's (now out of print) single pianist. Anthony Rapp proves his talent and versatility as he comes direct from the london company of Rent to this fantastic revival. He makes a fantastic Charlie. Fans of the original show will have a great time listening for new lyrics and musical arrangments, as well as the two new songs, "Beethoven Day" and "My New Philosophy". But happily, all the old favorites still remain, from "Snoopy" to "Happiness". A jazzed-up version of "Suppertime" brings down the house, and the title song has been redone to include a new segment for Charlie, "When do the good things start?" It fits well into the themes of the show, and brings this timeless musical into the new millenium. If you know this musical, you'll love this recording. If you don't know anything about this show, you don't know what you're missing.

Free Music Review: A brilliant remake with and incredible cast
Hit: 5 Stars

Having lately joined the pantheon of actors who have played Charlie Brown in this awesome show's history, I was thrilled to have this recording as a reference. Maybe my love for this recording is what primarily turned me off to the original cast recording, but this cast truly seems to get ahold of what Charlie Brown is really about. Childlike innocence, vulnerability, even naivete, but it still says something about society, relationships and life. Anthony Rapp is surprisingly (almost) perfect for Charlie Brown, Ilana Levine is very good as the supercrab herself, Lucy. Stanley Mathis as Schroeder does a great job as well (for the most part), and while I'm not terribly fond of B.D. Wong's interpretation of Linus, this show's brightest stars are definitely Roger Bart as Snoopy (Suppertime is nothing short of fantastic) and Kristen Chenoweth as Sally (My New Philosophy remains spectacular no matter how many times you hear it).

The reworkings of the original songs are most excellent, and the new songs are remarkable. For an up-to-date, but still sincere recording, look no further than the New Broadway Cast Recording.

Free Music Review: Great Broadway show for families
Hit: 5 Stars

As a long-time Broadway junkie, I've made it my mission to introduce my 2 young daughters to as many age-appropriate musicals as possible. Charlie Brown is fun with a basic, life-affirming message without being sugary and melodramatic. The multicultural casting on this version was a nice touch, and the cast vocals blend nicely as well as standing out on their own. It's no surprise that Kristin Chenoweth won the Tony for this performance-just listen to My New Philosophy and you'll see why. Great to hear Anthony Rapp apart from Rent, and BD Wong's My Blanket and Me is sweet and charming.

This is a good CD for anyone wishing to introduce their kids to Broadway. My girls and I sing to it in the car all the time! Due to the low overhead as far as sets and costumes are concerned, this show is performed frequently in community/regional theatres around the country. I highly recommend taking your kids to see it, and you'll enjoy it also.
