Free Music Review: Eliminator, shimiliminator this is were ZZ Top earned greatness.
Hit: 5 Stars

It wasn't Eliminator that made these guys great. This is the rubber meeting the road. Not many finer Rock/Blues exixt. On many famous must have lists, this album has a place in history.

Free Music Review: CUZ WE BAD, WE'RE NATIONWIDE!
Hit: 5 Stars

The first couple of ZZ TOP albums don't impress me very much, and the ones that did them so well in the eighties don't impress me much either. Though all of the albums have at least one or two good tracks, I cannot recommend them as solid albums.

THIS PEICE, is from 1979. They took about three years off after their highly succesful FANDANGO album before this one.

I LOVE this album, when I think ZZ TOP, I think this album. It's got the sound that I listen to ZZ TOP for. This is the sound I expected to find in earlier releases but didn't. Its a real fuzzy, gritty, blues sound, which IS ALMOST BETTER on the next album after this EL LOCO, but slips into eighties madness after that.

THIS and EL LOCO are the quintessential ZZ TOPs. The sound is everything I love in music, and the lyrical content (pretty much just about booze, broads, and being a bad ass) fits right along. Don't waste your money like I did on a greatest hits and span all the era's of ZZ TOP, the best days for these guys were between 1979 and 1981.
PICKS:
THANK YOU: Though it is almost like something that would be played at a wedding, the gritty production makes it cool.
BAD-NATIONWIDE: The best one here. Unstoppable lyrics (I had a fine fox in front, I had three more in the back...) I can't stop the grin!(THEY was smoking lucky strikes and wearin' nylons too!)
FOOL FOR HER STOCKINGS: more trash. YES
DUST MY BROOM: excellent blues cover
CHEAP SUNGLASSES: best bass solo around, funky riff peice

EVERY TRACK IS A WINNER though so don't think thats all....

A MUST HAVE!

TODAYS LESSON: go out and get yourself some thick black frames.

Free Music Review: Great Stuff
Hit: 5 Stars

This is super material and performances but the CD is too short. I would have liked to see at least a couple of bonus tracks or live cuts.

Free Music Review: Nice record, but don't buy the "best ZZ album" hype
Hit: 3 Stars

Ok folks, time for a real review rather than just a big fan air kiss.

Deguello. This LP marked the trios return to the active limelight from a several year hiatus. The results at times are excellent while others previewed the MTV fuzzy guitar "we sing of cars and girls with big boobs" schtick era that was soon to come. "Maniac Mechanic" and "Esther be the One" are examples of this. These two songs foreshadow where the band is going artistically (or was it just Billy G?).

There are strong bows to thier earlier 70s works with instant ZZ classics like "Cheap Sunglasses" and "I'm Bad I'm Nationwide." While lyrically not as good as the London era recordings. These efforts redeem the record and make it a worthy purchase. The cover of Elmore James "Dust My Broom" is also pretty good.

Overall, compared with the highwater mark of the early 70s this album is a departure but still has enough honest and rockin' qualities to keep it a nice addition.

Its after this album it all goes to hell.
