Free Music Notes for Rancho Texicano: The Very Best of ZZ TopFree Music Review: Redundant Hit: 3 StarsI love ZZ Top, but I have to wonder what's going on here. They just released a far more exhaustive box set, "Chrome, Smoke, and BBQ," so why would they release what is basically a condensed version of the same set? Are they going after the casual fan who maybe doesn't want to shell out $45 for the box set to get "Legs" and "Viva Las Vegas" on the same album? Sure seems like it. Boys, you've been sold out by the record company marketing types.
Free Music Review: Essential collection from the lil' ol' band from TX.. Hit: 5 StarsI'd give this one a 4.5. 5 stars for being great road music (or BBQin' music). It gets .5 off for the second CD.
If you're going to get a "best of" ZZ Top, this is by far the best one... the first CD alone covers a lot of favorites and is a 5 star.
The second CD continues with the classics, and then goes into the well-known MTV favorites, but kind of fills it up with unneccessary 12" remixes and one live cut towards the end instead of getting their more recent songs from the RCA era (even though not big sellers, they do showcase Gibbons' guitar playing that "Eliminator", "Afterburner" and "Recycler" drifted from) or deep cuts like "Precious and Grace", "Leila" or "I Got the Six".
But what's frustrating is that they have yet to put a full-length CD or DVD out from their live shows. Seeing ZZ Top live then was an event (whether it was the buffalo on stage, the "Legs" girls, or the props but keeping the music intact), or seeing them now as a great power trio where they sound as good as ever. The only live album is "Fandango", which is a good CD, but should extend the live part to a full length concert or a DVD of performances from over the years.
If you like this one and want to get into their catalog, get the first album, "Rio Grande Mud", and "Tres Hombres", all of which are bona fide classics. "Deguello" and "Eliminator" next. "El Loco" and "Tejas" after that. Then the RCA releases which are underrated. Then "Afterburner", "Recycler" and "Fandango" not because they're bad but because they're the "MTV era" songs that got a little too clinical for the people who love the "traditional" ZZ Top sound.
"Fandango" has a lot of great songs on it like "Tush" and "Blue Jean Blues" and showcases them live, but getting this one last makes sense. "Chrome Smoke and BBQ" is a very good box set that covers more territory but for most people might be a little too steep-priced. This is more or less a "sampler" of the box set, yet has a healthy selection of their songs that has everything the casual fan needs and then some.
Free Music Review: Very best, its misleading Hit: 3 StarsThe #1 cd of this collection is very good indeed, even though its always impossible to pick a collection of songs to fulfill everybodys taste.
Its a worse case with cd #2 which its spoiled by the including of the last three songs. Fare more better choises could have been added instead. E.g. I need you to night, Leila, Ten foot pole, to name a few. So this would have been a 5 star rate with a better # 2 cd.
Free Music Review: Love ZZ Top's music! Hit: 5 StarsVery nice sound on this CD. Great mix of their career. I could think of a few songs I would have liked to see on it... Ten Foot Pole, Manic Mechanic, Breakaway, Concrete & Steel, & Give It Up.
You could take back Velcro Fly (12" Remix), Legs (Dance Mix), Cheap Sunglasses (Live), Viva Las Vegas & Woke Up With Wood. I will trade you 5 for 5!!
Over all, nice collection. Thank you ZZ Top for years of great rock & blues.
Free Music Review: Another Miss by ZZ Top Hit: 2 Stars What's a "best of" ZZ Top release without fantastic songs like "Give it Up" and "Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings?" The answer is..."Not much!" I keep hoping they'll get it right someday.
