Free Music Notes for Rio Grande MudFree Music Review: ZZ Top's Best Hit: 4 StarsWith Tres Hombres a close second, I regard Rio Grande Mud as ZZ Top's Best album. Three songs in particular elevate this album above the rest. 'Aplogies to Pearly' a funky little instrumental piece that showcases Billy Gibbons's excellent slide work. From there we fade right into 'Bar-B-Q', an up-tempo blues rock burner, with some fiery lead guitar passages. Third is the haunting 'Sure Got Cold After the Rain Fell', an absolutely mesmerizing slow blues number that swells in the final passages to great effect, on the heels of Billy's masterful guitar work. Throw in 'Just Got Paid', 'Ko Ko Blue', 'Whiskey'n Mama' and the rest, and you've got one of the classic blues-rock albums of all time. An album that solidified Billy Gibbons as one of the tastiest guitarists ever, and demonstrates the early fire and inventiveness of this young band, before their commercial blandness took over. If you're a ZZ Top Fan, this album is a must-have.
Free Music Review: Smokin' Hit: 5 StarsZZ Top really cooks on this recording...a spirited and youthful band then, the blues meets rock and other such stereo typical jargon don't do the music justice. "Just Got Paid, Bar B Que, Chevrolet and other all show how the band was out to do THEIR thing not the record companies...true to the Texas spirit...GOOD WORK guys a real Texas treasure ...of music and a storehouse of memories for the rest of us. ...sundown1919@yahoo.com later folks...:)
Free Music Review: The Roots Of Modern Hard Rock Hit: 5 StarsRIO GRANDE MUD and TRES HOMBRES are the roots of modern hard rock. Sure, "Francine" is a weird mix of teen-pop and boogie, but the rest, especially "Just Got Paid", is pure blues-rock heaven. Play this up against any so-called metal album, and you'll find that RIO GRANDE MUD did more for rock & roll than the entire catalogs of Poison, Warrant, Motley Crue, and all the other "hair bands" combined.
Free Music Review: Blues rock par exellence Hit: 5 StarsRio Grande Mud ranks right up there with Tres Hombres and Deguello as ZZ Top's finest work. Their debut was good, but Rio Grande Mud is many times better. It rocks harder and the songs are better. Billy Gibbons' guitar smokes throughout the album! The little band from Texas really began to hit their peak with this album. This is the way blues rock is supposed to be played. However, the follow up to this record, Tres Hombres, is even better. This great album deserves a better CD though. It was remixed with heavy echo and synthesized drums. It really needs a new CD with the mix from the original vinyl record. The music deserves 5 stars, but the CD does not.
Free Music Review: Beware: The Remix Strikes Again Hit: 1 StarsOf course the music is great, but the bozo who remixed it botched another masterpiece. It really baffles me that someone had the nerve to tamper with these albums. It's like prying open a time capsule from 1972 and putting a laptop computer and a playstation inside of it. Drum machines and slick effects weren't on the original, so what the hell? Do they want to go add drum machines and overdubs to old Robert Johnson records too? Anyway, if you want this album on CD, just contact me. I'll gladly give you mine.
